Hi Tony,

Waaaay early, but that means I'm ready to rock. Or chill. Or something.

SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Greetings Tony and everyone,
so sad to read of the death of Kevin Ayers, one of the superstars of the 70s underground scene and founding member of Soft Machine, a foundation stone of all psychedelic and progressive, experimental and Jazz rock that was built on it.
Avatar 12:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Sir LP! Yes, I was very sad to hear about Ayers too. One of the greats....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

This. Is. Awesome.
Avatar 12:10pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

not heard of MACHIAVEL before, but sound British and heavily Genesis and early Supertramp influenced?
Avatar 12:10pm

Heya, Uncle Mikey! Glad you like!

@ Sir LP: They're Belgian -- and you're spot-on with the influences.

I hate fucking Bruge.
Avatar 12:12pm

More proggy-prog ... French this time.

Tony,
goes nicely to an old Dawn label comp that I just finished listening to before the show began.
Fruup, Jonesy, Stray etc.
Avatar 🥁 12:16pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Man, it seems like I get cornered into making Grobschnitt references on the FMU board at least once a day, but this Tai Phong track (the instrumental bits) does bear a vibe like early GS... a good thing, surely...
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

I can see it following Fruupp, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
Uncle Michael:

@SLP...film's a bit older than that, I'm afraid. I actually really liked Bruge.
Avatar 12:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Grobschnitt is a band I don't really know -- though I do have a bunch of the Eroc solo things.
Avatar 🥁 12:19pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Grobschnitt is a minefield: the '80s era stuff I can't dig. But the early records are solid. I love the Eroc & Eroc 2 records for their sheer unpretentious fun...
Avatar 12:20pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Yeh Rev.
Circle had Watcher in the skies written all over this.
This next track must be Israeli 70s rock band, as I recognise the modern hebrew lyrics about watching the stars and seeing the King and Queen.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, Poopik is an Israeli singer -- backed here by the Churchill's.

Avatar 12:26pm

Did the Nuge have a bit of a reputation of being republican arse licking, money loving, Vietnam supporting hair brain guitarist?
Avatar 12:26pm

I wonder: Would Nugent have called himself a conservative back in '69? Probably not, I'd guess.

That Hendrix cover was hysterical. Loves me some devolved "classic rock" covers. (Speaking of which, I saw The Residents last night.)
Avatar 12:32pm

@ MrFab: How were they? They played 5 minutes from me over the weekend, but I didn't go.
Avatar 12:33pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

speaking of Hendrix's machine Gun, once had the DVD of the Band of Gypsies live gig at the fillmore east.
Unfortunately the film went Black and white inot the second track - does anyone know why?

Avatar 12:35pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

no - UM - had enough to see it through, but always guessed that there was live tv coverage and that part of the filming had to be in black and white as most of tvs were not color in 1970?
Avatar 12:37pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

as this track started had the nasty feeling that you were playing Sad Cafe, now convinced this is not the case but some great art damaged alternative rock.
  12:37pm
MrFab:

Sir Lance, I believe that would be due to a lack of light, a condition of primitive video. it need lots of light.

The Residents were very entertaining, as weird and surreal as you would expect - no more eyeballs head, tho. The Singing Resident (now calling himself "Randy") spent much of the show in between-song monlogues that were quite funny at times, giving a history of the band that mixed facts with their usual mythologizing.
Mucially, it was very stripped down - perhaps a bit too much so.
Avatar 12:40pm
Carmichael:

Hey Tony, just for accuracy's sake that Machine Gun track was 1977.
  12:40pm
MrFab:

(I meant 'Musically', not Mucially.)
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Fab. I'm not a fan of their more recent material (as in the last 20+ years!), but figured they might still be fun live. Should have gone.

Susan:

Great show today, Tony! You're making a very difficult day at work for me fly. Only a half hour of sleep last night but this show is like medicine. Thanks!
  12:46pm
MrFab:

Well, as it was a 40th anniversary show, they did play a lot of oldies, even their first record "Santa Dog." And a Snakefinger song 'The Man in the Dark Sedan", in an unexpectedly moving, sincere tribute.
Avatar 🥁 12:47pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

First residents I ever heard was Eskimo, so that one's got my heart. But "meet the.." and "not available" are infinite classics. Isn't that "randy" guy the only founding member left? Or did I hear that somewhere...
Avatar 12:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya Susan! Great to see you here! Get some sleep tonight....
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rev. Turnip: At one point they were planning to train their kids to be their replacements, so that the Residents could live on in perpetuity. Don't know if that ever came to pass.
  12:50pm
Susan:

Haha! Thanks, Tony. I will probably recuperate once darkness sets in and do the same thing all over again. I'm a hopeless nightowl!
Avatar 12:53pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Tony,
for your information Poopik comes from the yiddish word Pupik and can mean:-

belly button
Navel
gizzard
chicken stomach.

It is a little chicken stomach commonly used in Jewish Cuisine in chicken soup.

Rich in Washington:

@Rev Turnip: I think there are only two original Rez left. The one who's now Randy and one that I am quite sure doesn't partake in any touring/performance stuff. Pretty sure my friend and I spotted the two other musicians out of 'uniform' and assisting with break-down after the show. They're quite young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm

I have heard that one of the Residents' early defectors went on to be in Freshly Wrapped Candies. It sounds plausible, to my ears.
Avatar 12:58pm

I gather one of the original members lived (lives?) in Portland, hence their appearances on KBOO in the '70s.

Hey Brian! It's possible, given that he's 15. I think, though, that's it's just that he's a pain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Rich in Washington:

I don't think so. The Portland connection was friend, Bill R, who was a DJ in the mid-70s. I interviewed Homer Flynn last week and he confirmed that KBOO was the first station to play The Residents.
Bill did a wonderfully weird show called Radio Lab until about '79 or so. He's also responsible for some pretty cool YouTube videos showing the early Rez' studio, etc...

Somewhere amongst my crap I still have my VHS of the episode of Night Flight (mole show era) which featured an "interview" with the residents (one besuited eyeball-head character not speaking, and a young "interpreter") . Great show. Was my first glimpse of many of those early videos.

Is this an Illinois-themed set, Tony?
Avatar 2:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Could be, accidentally -- I'm not very state-conscious. Country-conscious, yes; state-conscious, no.

The 1st 2 were from IL, but I believe Ms. Peacock is a Brooklynite.

SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

Tony,
looks like you have been checking out lots of funky hip hop labels like Stones Throw, Numero, and the breakbeat friendly lp by Annette Peacock.

Could it be you are now digging a bit of cool soul funk?
Avatar 2:51pm
Tony Coulter:

I've always liked a bit of that in the mix -- though as for Stones Throw and Numero I've only dipped a pinky toe into their funk stuff -- they release other flavors as well.
Avatar 2:53pm
SIR LANCELOT PRATT:

both labels are excellent and present top quality material, expertly remastered. Stuff that was slept on at the time of its original release.

Thanks for listening and commenting, everybody. See you next time for the first marathon shift. If I don't say so myself, my premium will really be something special this year.

Jeremy:

I found an original copy of that Annette Peacock a few years ago in a charity shop in Glasgow, but left it in the pub! Kick myself for that often.
