Favoriting Bryce: Playlist from March 29, 2013 Favoriting

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

hey, rr, it does sound kind of similar! especially with the chorusy bits.

the thing that's interesting is how different their methods were. ligeti composed in a "traditional" way, writing out giant elaborate scores.

but butch morris' stuff was totally (or semi-) improvised. he assembled large groups of musicians, and would teach them a huge list of gestures he invented to represent diferent types of activities, then play them like a giant instrument. really amazing to see in person!

here's another weird intersection of 20th century classical and free jazz. penderecki always thought jazz was "vulgar"....till he heard the Globe Unity Orchestra in '67. he was so intrigued, he eventually wrote this piece for free jazzniks. the other side of the record was a don cherry piece....

- Read a critique of Zappa's stuff for orchestra that it didn't use the range of it - which would be the point of havng one - but the Morse sounded really full & fully realized (& I am fine w/ scary).
- So I suppose he was partly expirimenting w/ Conducting : Bandleaders of dif. stripes - inc. Zappa - have used Gestures in one manner or another of course...prob. quite common in improvised musics - as one has to communicate & cue somehow, if even a nod or the wave of a guitar neck...

I only fave a track if 1. I didn't already know it (or, if I had completely forgotten about it from years ago), 2. I don't already have it, 3. I didn't order it already because of hearing it played. I mainly use the fave list to remind myself of things I'm afraid i might forget about, or want to go replay.

I thought about this issue when the fave star system started. If I faved everything I somehow like, I'm afraid the fave list would become useless, because I couldn't find anything or look through it easily. So I just fave pieces that I think I really need a memory jog for, in order just to know that it existed/exists.

But people can use it any way works for them!
