Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

Hello to anyone that's out there. Another rough night, hopefully music will help soothe the soul a bit.

goodness, i come into work and it's... Julie! an unexpected delight (though we miss Stan, of course). i have japanese game shows to work on tonight, so soothing is welcome here too!
Avatar 🦇 3:36am
Julie:

Japanese game shows?? Interesting...
Avatar 3:38am
ausmanx:

not so much if you have to subtitle them! www.fujitv.co.jp...
Avatar 🦇 3:39am
Julie:

What language are you subtitling them into?
Avatar 3:41am
ausmanx:

into English, though in inimitable Japanese style they have a few really bad English captions flashing up already, such as "NO KARAOKE, NO LIFE". so we get "Karaoke Battle" tonight, which means i'm subtitling Japanese love songs!
Avatar 4:11am

Carnt sleep. (as St Etienne would put it)

Avatar 4:21am
Matt from Springfield:

Too bad they didn't do a live version of my fave DSotM medley--"Us And Them"/"Any Colour You Like"/"Brain Damage", but these last two songs together go well!

"Greetings from WFMU: Where a "Split Seven-Inch" Isn't as Painful as it Sounds."!!!
Avatar 4:23am
Matt from Springfield:

And good follow up from Black Fortress of Opium! Our own personal cover by them!
Avatar 🦇 4:23am
Julie:

Matt the whole live Dark Side of the Moon is in that set
Avatar 🦇 4:25am
Julie:

matt seeing you here makes me think it must be nearly 6am!
Avatar 4:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Oooh, consider starting that from "Us And Them" sometime, when you feel like playing an album "side" :)

I know, it's been awhile since I was able to join you from so early in the show!

"The complete poem was released in 2003 on the Legacy: The Absolute Best compilation, and the re-issue of Waiting for the Sun."

A nice album "side" indeed! Didn't know the recorded version of this wasn't released until recently.
Avatar 🦇 4:47am
Julie:

@Matt Marmalade Kitty told me about it a while back. I have a box set that has all the albums with no extras, so I had to get it special :)
Avatar 4:51am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh wow, thanks MK for the rec! And a devoted fan you are to get this special after purchasing a whole box set :)
Avatar 🦇 4:51am
Julie:

Now I need to start saving up for the colossal Moodie's box www.moodybluesboxset.com
Avatar 4:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Now that's a well curated box set of the MBs! At first I was thinking "does that have ALL of their albums? They have so many of those!" But it seems that it's an ultimate Best Of, including live concerts and session takes, the very best over a long career.
Avatar 4:55am
Matt from Springfield:

And don't forget, "3 DVD audio discs containing the long-deleted 5.1 Surround Sound mixes of Days Of Future Passed, On The Threshold Of A Dream, To Our Children's Children's Children, A Question Of Balance, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour and Seventh Sojourn." I don't know what that is, but then you'll have to re-play those songs again in 5.1 Surround Sound ;)
Avatar 🦇 5:04am
Julie:

I don't think I have the sound system for that, but i guess it's nice to know it's there?
Avatar 5:06am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Yes, much like quadrophonic mixes! :)

Ah, lovely procession of the Tea Queen! In fact, I think it's about time for this Coffee King to make some himself. Ritually and in rhythm, of course...
Avatar 🦇 5:08am
Julie:

Wish I had the space for a massive sound system. As it is I don't even have space for my records.I went to visit them in storage this morning.
Avatar 5:14am
Matt from Springfield:

Kudos for playing a cover of the Stones' "Dandelion"! I always enjoyed the original.
Avatar 5:14am
Matt from Springfield:

Poor records, only getting an occasional visitation! Their family's separated!!
Avatar 🦇 5:16am
Julie:

@Matt such is Manhattan living! I don't have room for all my cd's either, been doing a slow purge
  5:17am
berg:

@Julie it looks like Boston is a massive sound system right now.. I used to associate it with its beer so far!
  5:23am
berg:

I really like that Can track.. weird though to listen to it in plain day light, more of a late night thing for me usually.
Avatar 🦇 5:24am
Julie:

Yeah it's getting close to daytime here too
Avatar 5:35am
C.S.:

Guess I got lost in the shuffle. C'est la vie.
Avatar 🦇 5:36am
Julie:

Sorry, CS, I went back to see what you were asking and I couldn't figure it out
Avatar 🦇 5:36am
Julie:

Sorry, CS, I rarely check posted links, have too many things open. The speed of dark would be slow, I imagine
Avatar 5:37am
Matt from Springfield:

Nice orchestrations! Kinda reminds me of the "She's Leaving Home" arrangements and instruments.
Avatar 5:38am
C.S.:

Reading the fortune cookie made me think of you show. Makes me wonder what the sound of one hand clapping in the dark would be.
Avatar 🦇 5:38am
Julie:

Damn, C.S. that's too deep for me to think about after being up two late nights
Avatar 5:39am
C.S.:

Wow, Matt. You're good at sending a message a few seconds before I send mine.
Avatar 🦇 5:40am
Julie:

Everybody sing!
Avatar 5:41am
Matt from Springfield:

@CS: Then again, sometimes sent messages take a while to get posted in the system, so hard to tell just who clicked first !
Avatar 5:42am
C.S.:

Ya. I'm sure i'm on a delay here. Julie's songs pop up on the playlist long before I hear them.
Avatar 5:42am

I guess I really should credit the orchestra on these
Avatar 🦇 5:46am
Julie:

Morning, IX
Avatar 5:47am
Matt from Springfield:

I wonder if the orchestra members are credited in the liner notes or anywhere.

MBs albums are short Julie, they're really only ONE song! ;)
Avatar 5:47am
I X Key!:

Good morning!
