Hello dere Amanda, and hello to the DrumSum devotees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm

Clams are even better for dipping than crinkle chips!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Amanda:

Hi all! Nice to greet you in a friendly way.
Avatar 12:04pm
Carmichael:

I'll never forget Deco Cuffe singing this song in the Commitments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Doug Schulkind:

This song is popular in Missouri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
G:

Holy crap, another drenching downpour in central BK.... I know it felt really humid yesterday, and now a mile or two of water vapor is dumping on us for hours, in reliquidized form...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
pacific standard simon:

Doug -- that dates back to Margaret Truman performing it at the White House frequently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
G:

but did you bring Khlam dip from ken's board?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Doug Schulkind:

@pss
I heard that Truman really bombed.
Avatar 12:09pm
Carmichael:

And you thought Harry could rock?!? She could burn the flippin' place DOWN!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
pacific standard simon:

Yeah, there was a lot of fallout from that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Amanda:

@Carmichael -- I know! I have the same thing about the Commitments. I think they got cut off, that was the scene where the lights went out and Derek the bass player got electrocuted. I love the Commitments.
Avatar 12:12pm
Carmichael:

Today is Thomas Pynchon Appreciation day, hence my avatar. Go read a book.
Avatar 12:12pm
Carmichael:

Yes Amanda, great movie. Shot in an area of Dublin I know well.
Avatar 12:14pm
john:

Always loved this Swing Out Sister song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
pacific standard simon:

BTW, my pledge premium'n'prize package arrived Monday -- it was like Christmas. The amount of money it took to mail it to me was a bit embarrassing, though, so I'll be refunding that to FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
fred:

@Carmichael: I have a special fondness for the crying of lot 49, despite its flaws. Any rumors about a new one? Inherent Vice was nice, but years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Amanda:

Congrats, pss! I hope you enjoy it very very much. You are too kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Uncle Michael:

Wha'z happening?
Avatar 12:26pm
Carmichael:

I haven't heard anything, Fred. Pynchon must be 500 years old by now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
pacific standard simon:

It's ALL happening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Uncle Michael:

I actually won Joan Jett in a charity raffle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
fred:

One thing I like about him is that there are scenes in his books that I find hilarious and nobody I've ever met in person even understands what the joke is. WFMU literature anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
pacific standard simon:

That's how I felt while reading Robert Coover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
fred:

@pacific standard simon: thanks for the lead, I'll check out his books. Timely tip, I exhausted my favorites authors, and didn't really like Faulkner despite the recommendations

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm

@fred
The age of the Internet has transformed life from the desperation of dearth to overwhelming overstimulation.

Hey, put that on a bumpersticker and sell it online!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Amanda:

I am enjoying this longer-than-usual set with its longer-than-usual tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm

Anything with Van Dyke Parks is OK with me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm

afternoon Amanda and everyone... I see you played a song by the Candy Machine - I used to work with one of the group members
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Amanda:

Thanks so much, guys! @ndbob, that is wild. I was thinking as I played it that they definitely needed more recognition...
Avatar 1:06pm
Dervish:

And this, this is an inspired selection.

after a blast of thunder up in westwood, rain has resumed. i think we're in for on & off thunderboomers thru tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm

Sondre Lerche? Neat! Unknown to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm

@Amanda - Sometimes it feels like a warm bath, sometimes, like a smack on the side of the head with a pig bladder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Amanda & listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Uncle Michael:

Let's discuss the myths and realities, regarding H, JF&R and the T-Bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Amanda:

Hello Brian and other listeners! @UM, I am just confused as to why Joe Frank was the only one allowed to use his entire name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Brian in UK:

Famed for keeping Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields off the No.1 spot here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Uncle Michael:

Well, I can't shed any light on *that*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Brian in UK:

A Playboy 7". Nice.
Avatar 1:26pm
ndbob:

@UM I always thought that the T-Bones and HJF&R were basically the same group
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Uncle Michael:

After the "Wrecking Crew" guys scored a hit with their cover of the Alka Seltzer commercial under the name The T-Bones, "Whatever Shape Your Stomach Is In," they had to hire a band to tour behind it. They hired some guys that ultimately called themselves H,JF&R...but those guys didn't make the record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm agnostic as to whether they played on the second record...which I have...but not in front of me.
Avatar 1:30pm
ndbob:

@UM ty - never knew that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Uncle Michael:

The L.A. studio guys were a) not pretty enough or young enough to be a concert draw and b) made way too much money in the studio to hit the road to support a record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Uncle Michael:

This is a great set, Amanda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
pacific standard simon:

My favorite version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Amanda:

Sanks very much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Brian in UK:

Off to see this film shortly in a renovated cinema, single screen.

Say, Uncle Michael... can I interest you in playing We Five's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", this Friday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Eugene:

This Foundations song is lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Amanda:

@Eugene -- I know, I was unable to follow it with anything because it sounded so good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
efd:

Hi Amanda and commenteers! Great to hear that Gas Hounds song!
Avatar 1:56pm
ndbob:

excellent show Amanda!
Avatar 1:56pm
Carmichael:

OK, back again. Yes, the T-Bones became HJF&R. Their 1st hit was actually "Sippin' & Chippin'", which became a potato chip commercial. I have the vinyl somewhere also, as well as the 45 of No Matter What Shape (on Liberty).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
pacific standard simon:

@Amanda - That probably explains why no live show follows yours on the GTDR stream. Great show, once again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Amanda:

Awwwwww that is sooooo sweeeeet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Uncle Michael:

@Simon: I might be able to accommodate...

@Carmichael: Sippin' & Chippin' was after Whatever Shape and HJF&R didn't play on Whatever Shape...is this a throw down?
Avatar 2:00pm
Carmichael:

Thanks Amanda. Burn in hell, fuckers!!!
Avatar 2:00pm
ndbob:

Lutefisk is a much beloved food - by some in North Dakota
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Uncle Michael:

Thank you, Amanda!
Avatar 2:01pm
Carmichael:

Here's some info, Michael: www.allmusic.com...

You're right about the order of the hits, I had it bass ackwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Amanda:

Thanks everyone! Talk to you next week. Don't forget to mail your card to your mama today if you haven't already.
