gerardo:

was actually wondering if you d play the gainsbourg/Birkin tune and similar stuff.. :-)
Avatar 11:55am

Nah -- I was just being goofy. Today's show is more likely to ruin your sex life.

I did do an x-rated FMU show years ago, though.

Saw David Johansen twice in the past month, once in Riverside Park and once on the island on Broadway and 97th. I think he lives in my hood, I guess NYC still has its thrills.
Avatar 12:15pm
Tony Coulter:

I used to see Debbie Harry flitting about a lot when I still lived in NYC.

DARK STAR MAN:

Hey Tony,
gonna play anything of interest to me today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Cubicle Carl:

The Futureheads track was on a Mojo magazine "post-punk" give- away CD a few years back.
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dark Star Man: Hmm -- guess you'll just have to stick around and find out!
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Right you are, Cubicle Carl! It's amazing how many of those Mojo comps there are -- many of them worth having. (Greetings, btw.)
Avatar 12:22pm
DARK STAR MAN:

CC,
stopped buying and reading Mojo years ago.
Too corporate rock and not really anything interesting in it, led zep, Bowie, Morrissey and guess what more led zep, bowie and Morrissey.
Tony do you read any magazines, The Wire etc.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Rich in Washington:

Oooh! I didn't know about this one (Eve L.).
I've got that one she did with A-Soma.
Hello, Tony!
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! The A-Soma LP is great -- plus her stuff with Crass ("Penis Envy").
Avatar 12:26pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dark Star Man: I've sort of stopped getting any mags. Used to be a fan of Audion. Used to write for a few myself (Ear, i/e/, etc.).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Rich in Washington:

I appreciated the often Dada approach of some Crass projects, even if they're a bit much to take in one go.
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Some are much more interesting musically than others, to my ears.
Avatar 12:34pm
DARK STAR MAN:

was Audion a prog/Kraut intensive mag?
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Dark Star: Yep, from the U.K. Edited by the Freeman bros, who also ran Ultima Thule.
Avatar 12:36pm
DARK STAR MAN:

oh yes its from Ultima Thule - from Leicester in the UK.
Avatar 12:37pm
DARK STAR MAN:

Lat time I spoke to them they were really struggling from the recession in the UK and had downsized the shop.
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Never visited the shop, but I used to get stuff from their mail order catalog all the time.
Avatar 12:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Mail order catalogs used to be a huge factor in my musical explorations. Some favs were: Eurock, Wayside, ZNR, RRR, AYAA, Recommended, Rec Rec -- the list goes on and on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Rich in Washington:

I have acquire a recent appreciation for early Cabaret Voltaire, which I previously didn't have.
I dropped in on them around Red Mecca and found their earlier stuff kind of impenetrable but now I think I like it more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Cubicle Carl:

It actually took some ingenuity to create some of the effects on the Cabaret Voltaire track back in the day. They must have felt they ruled the world making all those great sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Rich in Washington:

@Cubicle Carl: Indeed! I think that's what attracts me so much to that early stuff now. I can appreciate how much work went into it. They were like a Sheffield version of the BBC Radiophonics Workshop.
Avatar 12:53pm
Tony Coulter:

Early Cab Volt is fab in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Rich in Washington:

I really like everything by CV up to Arm of the Lord. After that, they sort of lost me, but I do appreciate Richard H. Kirk's solo work, as well as the last few, very techno CV albums, which were essentially RHK solo albums.
Avatar 12:56pm
Jeremy N:

This Taped Rugs label bears further examination...some wizardry going on. I am crazy about the early Cabs too! The Methodology 3 CD thing really lays bare some of their techniques.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Rich in Washington:

Woah! This is cool!
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

RE: The Taped Rugs label -- they've been around since around 1980 and have loads of releases -- but somehow I never heard of them until recently.
  1:00pm
MrFab:

this Charles Rice Goff III stuff reminds me of '80s one-guy-with-a-casio-and-a-four-track tape releases. Glad to know that style lives.

Oh, and does Turkey the food makes them sleepy, or the country?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm

Is the Turkey stuff new or old? Sounds like vintage tape-era stuff.
Avatar 1:39pm

@ Rich: It's brand new turkey.

But they've been making turkey for a long time.

First learned of Graham Fitkin when I created a pandora radio playlist with composer Michael Torke as the seed music.
Avatar 2:22pm
Tony Coulter:

That makes sense. (Heya, Jim P!)
Fitkin was only in his mid-twenties when he wrote this piece -- sheesh.
  2:26pm
Jim Pastor:

Intense. Not really a song that could be played from memory. Page turner has his work cut out for him.
Avatar 2:26pm
Tony Coulter:

I haven't warmed up to Pandora or similar services yet. I still like having music on my shelves and in my hands -- sticks to my brain much better that way.
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

And, of course, there's r-a-d-i-o!
  2:33pm
Jim Pastor:

Pandora is a complex math equation playing DJ. A neat idea. But necessarily lacks artistic vision and nuance.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
listener james from westwood:

didn't like pandora. too much like raising a pet or an infant. i kept having to tell it not to do things. i prefer human djs who can make intuitive leaps between tunes no algorithm can. can pandora play music from the first concert it saw? do a list of celebrity song covers that arent the usual "at their worst" fare? pay tribute to a producer and composer across five different genres like liz did yesterday? no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
DCE:

let's hear it for the radio! something about the medium is very affecting
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

no offense to those who have successfully raised pets or infants, now. i'm just not suited to the first and can't own the second in this building!

er, reverse the implied order of pet and infant in that second sentence! :D
