RevRab, I've been saying this for years, the Founders did not intend to sanction what they would surely have recognized as weapons of war for the backyard. The second ammendment guarantees the right of communities to field a "militia" --which means if you live where there's a local police, sheriff, Nat. Guard, State Troopers, etc, then you are protected by the "well regulated militia" the Founders had in mind. This "God-given right as an American to bear any weapons I can get my hands on" thing is a Neoconservative vanity...

glenn:

According to a 2010 report by Statistics Canada, the murder rate is higher outside big cities, and has been for at least a decade. The study measured homicides in the country’s 34 census metropolitan areas (CMA) — urban areas with a population of 100,000 or more — and found that in 2010 the average murder rate was 1.5 per 100,000 people. For non-CMAs, which encompass rural areas, the rate was 1.9.

For the period 2000 to 2009, the murder rate in CMAs compared to non-CMAs was less dramatic — 1.81 to 1.92 — but still suggested that living in the countryside was more deadly, statistically. (It's worth noting that Canada's rates are still very low compared to those in the U.S. The 2010 murder rate in New Orleans, for example, was 49.1 per 100,000 people.)

@ Glenn: Right on about water. I lived in Cali for years; the entire Los Angeles basin is supplied with fresh water by a single aquaduct system. And overdue for a big quake. When that happens, you'll have millions of people in an immense disaster area w/no fresh water available if the aquaduct is damaged.

See how everything leads back to Earthquake? The big hero is played by Heston, a big gun rights activist. And Marjoe's character is a National Guardsman who is repressed and neurotic and goes on a killing spree

I like Chris Rock's bit: “You don’t need no gun control, you know what you need? We need some bullet control. Men, we need to control the bullets, that’s right. I think all bullets should cost five thousand dollars… five thousand dollars per bullet… You know why? Cause if a bullet cost five thousand dollars there would be no more innocent bystanders.
Yeah! Every time somebody get shut we’d say, ‘Damn, he must have done something ... Shit, he’s got fifty thousand dollars worth of bullets in his ass.’
And people would think before they killed somebody if a bullet cost five thousand dollars. ‘Man I would blow your fucking head off…if I could afford it.’ ‘I’m gonna get me another job, I’m going to start saving some money, and you’re a dead man. You’d better hope I can’t get no bullets on layaway.’
So even if you get shot by a stray bullet, you wouldn't have to go to no doctor to get it taken out. Whoever shot you would take their bullet back, like "I believe you got my property.”

well I mean the mass killings of many people in one place like a school or a mall. I don't think this happens much in Canada.

Hearing the Ian Matthews track just sent me plunging nostalgically into the Internet for info about his old 70s tracks.
