Surely NOT what Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, and all the groovy cats who dreamed up this country would have wanted--they would have thought widespread ownership of assault rifles and ammo etc. in an America of 300 million was literally insane.

@Droll: yup, that patent system has become FUBAR, and the problems posed by that are very real and very big.
@Sam: Buck carried a "rocket gun" until WWII, the everything had to be "atomic" to sound up-to-date and properly futuristic. That barefoot American lad w/rolled-up dungarees, suddenly wanted something ATOMIC of his own, man.

My sister teaches in the school district next door to Arapahoe HS in Colorado. Her school district has two counselors (one part time) for maybe 3,000 students. Her kids' needs are NOT being served.

The point is that WE as a people are much less likely to be dragged from our houses in the dead of night and shot through the heads in front of the rest of the neighborhood.
When poor children are shot by the police DAILY where are the move-on buses for those outcries.....
Guns prevent over a million crimes per year.
People around you have been heavily armed all your life and just because you have never known does not mean it ain't working just fine without you.

...Most Western industrial (wealthy) countries don't have these guns, & they seem okay. Just like most of them have figured out Health Care is expensive & everyone will need it (even if people don't think so @ age 20). So - I'm not buying it. Should we say that if heroin is illegal, only outlaws will have heroin, & do nothing? We could go back & forth on this...If someone invades your home w/ a gun w/ deadly intent, & you kill them 1st, I don't have a problem w/ it. I just wonder if we need any of these guns in the 1st place - & I don't want to live in the Wild West where the person w/ the biggest gun wins. I think we ought to be able to do better (I'm not *sure* we can).

NYCBONE, are you a devotee who knows this stuff off the top, or did you look it up? So what was Chuck Heston's character name?
And: why is George Kennedy in almost ALL of these meatball epics? What gives?

What do you get when you cross Earthquake with Towering Inferno???

In fact in Connecticut there have been I think 36 deaths by long guns of any kind (3 from assault rifles) an assinine term by the way, in 2 decades.
I lived in Sandy Hook for 18 years, I just moved YEAH! and I attended many of the task force meetings and did a lot of research back during the hub bub. I have links just not readily available and they are not easily, yet are easily found if you have a clue. I have tried to shed a lot of the issue, as it is very emotional and painful. Yet the truth is on the side of personal responsibility.

Can you imagijne the outrage from the parents of the first 8-yr-old who is s accidently killed by a teacher who's "defending" himself and his (her?) students?
The NRA is an ugly joke

For the period 2000 to 2009, the murder rate in CMAs compared to non-CMAs was less dramatic — 1.81 to 1.92 — but still suggested that living in the countryside was more deadly, statistically. (It's worth noting that Canada's rates are still very low compared to those in the U.S. The 2010 murder rate in New Orleans, for example, was 49.1 per 100,000 people.)
P-90:
See how everything leads back to Earthquake? The big hero is played by Heston, a big gun rights activist. And Marjoe's character is a National Guardsman who is repressed and neurotic and goes on a killing spree

InBrkly:
Yeah! Every time somebody get shut we’d say, ‘Damn, he must have done something ... Shit, he’s got fifty thousand dollars worth of bullets in his ass.’
And people would think before they killed somebody if a bullet cost five thousand dollars. ‘Man I would blow your fucking head off…if I could afford it.’ ‘I’m gonna get me another job, I’m going to start saving some money, and you’re a dead man. You’d better hope I can’t get no bullets on layaway.’
So even if you get shot by a stray bullet, you wouldn't have to go to no doctor to get it taken out. Whoever shot you would take their bullet back, like "I believe you got my property.”
