On an entirely different subject, I just heard Soft Machine's "Bundles" album the other day for the first time. Gained a whole new appreciation for Allan Holdsworth.

I have Vol. 2 bought that 10 years ago and wasn't knocked out with Soft Machine. I tried. I liked it ok but didn't destroy me.

Bundles is very different from Vol. 2.

Am I the only one who applauds or snaps when listening to jazz records at home? Jazz solos always sound wrong without some audience reaction at the end of one solo and beginning of the next.

12539, Of course tapes never skip like that, cassettes have their own unique sound after being crinkled when they get wrapped around a capstan. And of course the hiss, and muffling from faulty bias and type settings.

Ok slightly off topic but since this an station based in Jersey City I figured maybe some of you may know. I'm thinking of going to the store Iris Records, which is in Jersey City and is about a half mile from the Path station, does anyone know if its a generally safe area?
  10:52pm
P-90:

@Mdurek: legend has it that when student protesters occupied the administration buildings at the Columbia campus in 1968, they brought industrial-strength magnets with them to de-gauss the reels of IBM magnetic tape that contained the student draft registration records
-- a stone-age, electro-mechanical form of what we would call "hacking" here in the 21st Century
Avatar 10:56pm
Whooda:

I grew up in a TV repair shop, my dad had a de-gaussing ring, about 12" diameter ring he would pass in front of the picture tube and it made the greatest psychedelic patterns.
Avatar 10:57pm
Mdurek(The_Use):

@P-90 Wow! They did that in a movie, right? In the early 90s. Crazy
  10:57pm
LovecraftDude888:

heard of Iris recently, never been there. I haven't been to ought but Hoboken in years...I think that area of JC is like, ok. Not great, not really dangerous. Paterson is a lot worse....

@G.O.O.D., I've never been to Iris, but that whole Grove St. area is fairly nice these days. There's a Barcade on Newark Ave. and a bookstore-cafe just opened there too. Not at all dangerous from what I've seen.

LovecraftDude888:

I think J.C. or most of it was pretty seedy or dangerous in the 80s back..after that, most of it upscaled to some degree but not all of it. My friend S.T. Joshi used to live there on edge of Hoboken years ago...it was ok. I never got hassled.
  11:02pm
LovecraftDude888:

i recall one winter walking from PATH HOboken to JC and was a solid sheet of ice all the feckin way. Scary.

@posing naked with snake: hard to believe that was not THE direct inspiration for Richard Avedon's famous 1981 photograph of the teenaged Nastassia Kinki posing naked with a 7 foot python wrapped around her

That Tangerine Dream sounds like the archetype to all musical shorthand used to introduce scenes of drug induced hippy culture.

@lovecraft , almost did that tonight, I was carrying groceries and a massive can of cafe Bustelo, so I just kept running forward. 10ft later, recovered...no fall. People gotta be careful though, they are all out of salt

The ice upset my balance, and the gigantic cafe bustelo can kept pulling me to the sidewalk, but I ran to keep the center of balance on my feet! Close call.

saved by the Bustelo. i think Nastassja was 20 when that pic was taken or 19 maybe. snake porn
  11:09pm
P-90:

@whoo: As I recall, the problem with playing with a magnet and a CRT picture tube TV screen, dragging the phosphors to make those psychedelic patterns, was that it was tricky to drag them all back to where they belonged and make the "rainbows" go away completely, so you could watch the Dean Martin show and see it clearly (Lennon Sisters, anyone?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@P-90 - Yeah, we found that car speakers had powerful magnets that were good for that.

Yelp folks seem to be saying downtown JC south area near WFMU etc. is coming along.....Legal Grounds Coffee is highly thought of. Guess it's becoming new Hoboken since Hoboken is now not the olde Hoboken no mo. Trust me on that one.

Avatar 11:21pm

Good riddance! I just hate when I get on the path after 11 on a weekend, and it exhales human beings and waits at HOB station for like 10 mins. What's up with that!
  11:22pm

sorry, baby-boomers, I am reminded that the Lennon Sisters were on TV with Lawrence Welk, it was "The Goldiggers" girl vocal group on the Dino show

Mdurek..ha, sounds like the PATH. I haven't even been on a PATH in ages....just never get out there much. Last time was in Hoboken I drove and parked for a final hurrah at Maxwells...urgh. ----that is a weird Teardrops collection...odds and ends weirdness

Cool -- sounds like fun DJ pairings. Why are you playing drums for H&M? Aren't you "just a bassist"? Give up the throne to Bryce, he's a fuckin' monster on tubs!

Yes, bass is my real instrument, but I'm reasonable on the drums, and I like playing the H&M material on drums.

  11:52pm
P-90:

@Primo! those four are all pairings I'll be looking forward to, great choices. Of course one is curious, do you get to make suggestions, have input, or does Ken just sit down with a bottle of scotch and a legal pad and decide on the pairings ("duets"?)...

Also curious, I think it's come up before, but are you a Fender guy, or something else, bass-wise?
Avatar 11:54pm
Droll:

Thanks 12539! Irwin & Clay are hosting together for three hours?! That's gonna be an interesting one.

I can't believe the show's almost over already... Thanks for all the horns tonight. I'll start writing new "bass is my real instrument" jokes so I have them ready for your performance in a few weeks.

@P-90: People sign up for other DJs' shows depending on when they're available, etc. Some DJs work out pairings among themselves. Ken puts the final schedule together taking all that stuff into account.
