Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

“Actually, some people have noted a similarity between Don Knotts and Mick Jagger.” That so anti-semitic I can’t even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
mariano:

@Jake: Hah! Wait, are you saying that because of the Deutschland uber alles thing the other day on Brian's show? Still embarrassed about that, should've just kept my mouth shut.
  8:26pm
JakeGould:

You said “Deutschland uber alles…” during a radio show? I had a family friend who would sing that during Hanukkah. Needless to say I am not friends with them anymore!

I love Sinner's Crossroads because it tickles a good place in my brain and I can't pretend I know squat about this music. It just works in my ears.

Hey - did you forget me?

you guys are the best
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
mariano:

@Jake: no, I didn't say it. Someone pledged from Germany, and Bronwyn sang it, obviously completely unaware that that verse isn't ok to sing, so I wrote in and said basically "careful, a lot of Germans would be offended by that." Then it turned into a long discussion, and I really didn't want it to turn into a thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Uncle Michael:

I certainly have an ear for how gospel informs music I'm more familiar with...which is why it's comfortable to me. I'm reading Arthur Kennedy's book "boogaloo" which is helping fill in a lot of gaps in my understanding of the history and culture of the music.
  8:37pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: Oh, that’s no big deal. I mean it’s stupid, but that is all I will say. I can at least ignore a show or a DJ. But to have that sung during childhood Hanukkah meals by a displaced relative. Sorry, but that is evil. Good thing that family friend is gone.
  8:37pm
JakeGould:

Which is all to say that is why I like shows like this. I like the music. I like the heart. Like the soul.
Avatar 8:40pm
Davee:

Mouse Pledge - did you not receive it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
mariano:

@Jake: Yeah, I felt bad because I know that Bronwyn meant it completely innocently, like it was still the national anthem, and she felt bad and apologized on air. I just didn't want to be the finger-wagging PC scold. I totally hear you about Hannukah though, sounds like a real creep, and you're probably better off not knowing him any more.

@mariano: You know why I am not too upset? WFMU is filled with hippie Yids. I trust their ability to self-correct.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
mariano:

@Jake: Hah, yeah! My recent ex is Jewish, and in her extended family there are some Israelis, and I was shocked at some of the antisemitic humor they engaged in, Holocaust jokes and all. I guess if your family survived, you have a right to deal with it however you want.

HEY. THERE's a radio show going on!

Sho 'nuff, a radio show going on! Finally got around to pledging -- thank you, Kevin Nutt! Jesus, and Sweet Baby Jesus, thank you for your devotion.
  8:53pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: Won’t get into my family history with the Holocaust other than to say, that I’m quite happy that side of the family is now gone thanks to divorce. Uber alles, but not over me no more. Screw them. Praise the man with the bible in his hand!
  8:55pm
JakeGould:

And that is a nice t-shirt. Quite nice! Very nice!

Thanks everyone! See you next week!
