Greetings on this fine day!

Rynac:

Nice to hear something by Khachaturian other than "Saber Dance".

Bethany Ryker:

Yep, so much more! Tends to be the case across the board. I'm glad to be able to present the lesser-known works. This one particularly grabbed on and wouldn't let go.

Robert:

I listened to a lot of Yugoslav folk music as a child (grandparents' records, which I still have), and I don't hear any of that in Russian classical stuff. But maybe I need to go back & listen now.
Avatar 8:18pm
Bethany Ryker:

Robert, I'd be very interested to know what you hear!
  8:18pm
Robert:

I remember a lady DJ on WFMU in the 1990s play some Serbian stuff, especially from a band that did Serbian-style versions of other popular music, as an example of metric complexity. Measures like 2-2-2-4, 2-3-2, etc.

ranjit:

Hello! I was just going to say I couldn't hear the folk music in this, and then I could.
  8:21pm
Robert:

Trouble is, I don't know enough music GENERALLY. I got out the Yugoslav 7B8s etc. for friends one July 4, and was informed that one piece was "Buffalo Gals" in Croatian or whatever. I didn't know "Buffalo Gals"!
  8:22pm
Robert:

Like the Jackie Gleason character who didn't know "Swanee R."
Avatar 8:23pm
ranjit:

Swanee River always makes me think of Bugs Bunny, but that might also be the influence of Vicki's show just now.
  8:25pm
Robert:

OK, now this Maric piece sounds like an andante Heroica. Well, at least one phrase did.
  8:27pm
Robert:

Is Octoicha Hungarian for Heroica?

Thanks Bethany!

Bethany Ryker:

Language is serbian...look it up please!
  8:32pm
Robert:

Google says its "Stubborn Super Theme Octoicha".
  8:33pm
Robert:

...and thinks it's xlating from Italian!
Avatar 8:34pm
ranjit:

Could it mean octet? "Oktoih (Serbian Cyrillic: Октоих) ... is a book of liturgical hymns for singing in eight parts." - wikipedia
Avatar 8:35pm
Bethany Ryker:

She likely titled it in Italian, that makes the most sense
  8:35pm
Robert:

Thanks. I figured it had something to do w 8. But I woud've guessed eighth notes or the like.
Avatar 8:36pm
Bethany Ryker:

Tema - Theme, Ostinato is a musical term referring to something that repeats (er, stubbornly)
Avatar 8:37pm
ranjit:

Ostinato on a liturgical-hymn theme?
Avatar 8:39pm
Bethany Ryker:

She was deeply influenced by Byzantine church. I think you are the sleuth, Ranjit. I MISS PROGRAM NOTES. DEARLY.
Avatar 8:40pm
ranjit:

Someday they'll find a way to include liner notes in an mp3... i hope...
Avatar 8:40pm
Bethany Ryker:

By the way. This Martinu trio is brilliant, no?
  8:41pm
Robert:

It did have that "Heroica" strand running thru it, so I tried Google to see Serbian for "heroic". I would read back the Cyrillic as "heroiski".

ranjit:

The Juilliard Serenade is somehow pretentious and fun at the same time.

mary:

that DJ in the 90s who played Serbian music among other things is Paula Gordon. For a while she had an overnight show.
I used to listen to her because she was part of a gang I know that was involved in contemporary theater performance art/theater, like The Wooster Group and early Steve (Buscemi)(yea) and Mark (Boone Jr)work...Tech director for choreographer Jo Andres...and she was a DJ on FMU...she decided to move to Sarajevo. Politics and art. Not sure of her location now.

Love the show. Bethany is good.
