Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from June 6, 2014 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
pacific standard simon:

Five years ago, I stayed in a cabin at the Bailey Resort near the top of Palomar Mountain, where the observatory is. The cabin was entirely decorated with John Deere collectibles, much to the embarrassment of the lady who maintained the place (the decorating was done by her brother-in-law). I think she was secretly hoping the guests would steal all the toy tractors and such.

So that means that the two vinyl copies of Paul's Boutique that I got for free at either CMJ or NMS and lost in Sandy were from the 1989 versions of those conventions. Huh, that means next year is 25 years since I graduated college. Well then.

While I was listening at the sink to Pocketful of Miracles, I was thinking there should be a term for that particular familiar period flavor of vocal/arrangements/studio style. And while Harper's Bizarre came to mind as characteristic practitioners, I didn't realize it was them. So now I know. 'Twas Ted. And for me, the style will be..."Ted." Learned at Hinky Diinky U.

"Sunshine pop " is good 'n suitable, although sometimes the sentiments in those numbers veer toward the melodramatically wistful and poignant...partly cloudy. And "sunshine pop" also summons up for me at the same time a different kind of gratingly wispy, hollow, forced, simpering, unappealing Top 40 efforts.

Speaking of forced and hollow, I looked at 30 seconds of Having A Wild Weekend the other night and had to bail with a sneer. Maybe another try later, in a different frame of mimicry-patient mind.

Crazy, Mike! They were British, right?
Uncle Michael you've now joined a very small club, previously inhabited solely by John Allen and me.

Lake, the German band, would fit nicely here.

Mike East:

yes, efd. he's got a sweet accent. If you call them up, you get a message: "for the rental dept. press 1, etc" - its his voice on the recording.

Uncle Michael:

Who's letting the air out of this record? Cut it out.

I went through a Lucretia MacEvil phase. It lasted for about forever.

That's great, Mike. That single has been a fave since it came out. Over the years I've picked up a couple of their LPs but nothing grabbed me as much as "5.7.0.5."

oh snap, I see on the ol' Wikipedia that one of the guys from City Boy (not the bass player) went on to form The Maisonettes! I just played their single on my show a couple of weeks ago.

I used to be DCT's limo driver in the 80s. A talented fellow, but nowhere near so talented as he believed. That would have been humanly impossible. He liked me because I was fast and smooth and discreet. I never told him I considered his band not to have anything to do with the real BS&T.

I look forward to each week's version of Last Thing. Thanks for another great show!

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
WFMU's Scott McDowell, host of The Long Rally (wfmu.org...), will be filling in for D:O Radio here on the Drummer Stream this coming Monday, 12-3pm. You can listen to the stream 24 hours a day, of course, but the next actual live human running the controls will be Scott at Noon on Monday!

I didn't mean I didn't enjoy either Mr. Clayton-Thomas, nor his band. I'm as big a bozo as anyone, and I enjoy 'em all. I just meant it wasn't BS&T. It should have been the DCT Band or been a solo act.
