My fire escape garden has been invaded by a pair of squirrels lately. This morning, they only left when I doused them w/ cups of water. They stripped all of my chilies (buried some in other planters, just dropped others when they realized they aren't tasty food). At least the birds I can scare away.

So much of this era was fed by cassette-recording answering machines. So much great material was scored via wrong-numbers that left confused messages, or tapes left in machines donated to thrift-stores... Great stuff.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
listener james from westwood:

Turnip, were you an FMU listener when the Professor was running the Audio Kitchen show? He'd play all manner of found sound, be they mass purchases of C60s at thrift stores, tape letters or kids horsing around, or scavenged answering machine/voice mail messages. wfmu.org... is where you'll find 'em.
Avatar 1:32pm
northguineahills:

The squirrels also knocked my habaneros off the fire escape, and they weren't even fruiting yet. Only saved one, but the trauma set back it's development about a month. Thank ye gods that I've already harvested over a dozen jalapenos. Doesn't look I'll have poblanos this year, but the tomatoes should be fine if the squirrels don't get to that. Trying rainbow chard this year.

Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: That's tricky -- rare and sought after don't always overlap. There were fewer than 10 copies made of the Bomis Prendin cassette I aired a while back. So that's a possible candidate....

it's like in the documentary, vinyl. there are guys out there who will spend 5,000$ on a record, and then can't afford a new roof for their house, and then can't seem to figure out the common denominator.
Avatar 2:21pm

Of course, you could make a new roof out of vinyl (vinyl siding).

they're waterproof, and they have a nailing hole in the centre. for the caps, you could just bend them with a heat gun. voila! a new roof.

I can understand the AC/DC thing if you're a completist with a bit of extra money and AC/DC is basically the only band whose music you buy. But for me, for ever record that I can pay big money for there are 12 others I'd like to hear.

I may collect musical media, but I'm not a collector. I buy musical media to listen to it, don't care about the monetary value. That said, I do have quite a few records (and some cassettes) that are worth something, but many of them I've played or scratched to death. (even when bought in near-mint condition).

yup, andrew. The most I would pay for a out of print collector album (except for a very few cases) would be the price of a new CD at the time.

So, if it was something I was absolutely crazy about I'd pay $12-20 (sale U.S. CD price - sale import CD price).
