Favoriting August 27, 2014: The Perfect Pop Song?
DID YOU KNOW? Scientists have created what they’re calling the “perfect pop song” by using “natural selection.” But in a perfect world, the perfect pop song could be anything -- from Disco Dandia and Polish guitar shredding to Atlanta DIY and Italian avant-garde. In fact, every perfect pop song would share but one important thing in common with all other examples: They would each be precisely -- not a second more or less than -- three minutes long. So pop! Such perfect!

FIRST FUCKUP ALERT: A couple of seconds are being snipped off of each song during the cross-fade. Are they still "perfect"? Such ask!

Whoo! Sorry I'm late! Friend called me to ask about buying health insurance. (I had bought it well before the ACA, so I've somehow become my gang's "expert" on the subject. Yes, that horrifies me too.)

No idea if it's any easier now. I do know that at minimum, using healthcare.gov will list which insurance co's serve NJ. I certainly had no clue before I began Googling! (My prev. employer's insurer was based in CA, and, after my layoff, tried to hike rates like 30%. This was when the ACA was taking form in Congress and sent as "good" a message as all those car execs flying their private jets into DC to beg for money.)
Avatar 7:17pm
Holly in NC:

@glenn - s'ok. I've not signed up, won't sign up, can't afford premiums & don't want to be thrown onto the medicaid bus where my home would be at risk. Until we get real (& affordable & non-punitive) single payer I will continue using our local sliding scale clinic for planned needs, and stupid $250 urgent care for unplanned :-(

Gary, when I used to drive my 18-wheeler cross country, the company didn't give us time for bio-breaks, so I used a soda bottle. It was important however to look before drinking the ginger ale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm

ndbob, I recently learned that FDR pressed for a better system than what we ended up with. It was demonized by the AMA and his era's equivalent of the teabaggers. They weren't willing to give him anything more than Social Security or the other New Deal programs that made it thru that era.

@Bowery Bum - It looks like you're listening via phone, which limits archive access to the 5 most recent shows of every show currently on schedule. Breakfast this am = dandelion greens, mache, & arugula (sounds healthy so far, right?) plus some crumbled crispy pork belly [aka uncured/unsmoked bacon, aka chicharrones] & an egg, finished with the egg-frying butter deglazed with a big glug of sherry. Yes I went there, and it was good :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm

@holly - it is amazing what one finds when one searches youtube for pork belly cooking instructions. every culture does it somewhat differently...but every recipe is so fucking involved and insane...most invove violent stabbing or ritualistic slicing and then soaking it in some obscure liquid or chemical combination (condensed milk, baking soda, gasoline etc)... i always like watching cooking videos in other languages. you sound nice and your cat is cute. have a good night, gotta make them treats. gonna listen downstairs!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

@hyde - ummm, it's probably good but how arbitrary! couldn't you do it with any spice? or is it so amazing. you must like rosemary. my regular breakfast lately is a rosemary/sea-salt bagel from myer's bagels in burlington.....montreal style!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
cosmic matrix:

@ hyde - and your cat is a cute too. but did it lose an eye?
Avatar 8:36pm
hyde:

@cosmic matrix the thing is, it's not really overpoweringly rosemary-ish. you can taste it, but i think it works with the vanilla and gets sort of muted. i've thought of trying it with a thyme/orange zest combo, but haven't yet.

and yep, my cat is a shelter kitty who got an infection before she got picked up and only has one eye with about 50% vision in it. but it doesn't really slow her down that much...

@cosmic matrix - Bitty says thank you, but she does not self-identify as "cute". As ruler of 2 humans and 2 other cats, she prefers to identify as regal.

(covering her ears) Most apt descripitions = flirtatious, coquette, vixen, avid hunter, and well, b*tchy. As well as wildly loving, possessive & affectionate. And, indeed, cute.

@hyde! Must share with you crazy good rosemary corncake recipe from a 198x issue of Food & Wine, it's not on line & I'm not at home to type in. A really, really, good recipe. @ngh you would like also, I think

Gary, that's why I asked about the Leuchtags.

Franklin Bruno on Elvis Costello is great. Also the book on Public Enemy.

A friend of mine wrote the 33 1/3 for Exile on Main Street

@Gary - I still have not seen Casablanca all the way through, in one sitting. How awful is that?

@Hyde - How's the book? Truly is one of my top 10 albums, and I'm not a carpetbagger. All hail my friend Tyler for forcing me to listen back in '89.

@Gary again - that's another album I know by heart, but it hasn't stayed with me the same way Paul's Boutique has. That said, I need to dust it off & give it a listen. For a long time I just could NOT listen to "Divorce Song". Because my ex and I discovered the album at the same time.

I wanna read that one, Michael

lydia hiby told me my cat considers herself a princess.

Bill Janovitz wrote it. I have it around here somewhere...

I'd like to read the PE one.and the Slint one. and UM's pal's one.

@Holly, I haven't started it yet. It's in *gasp*...THE PILE.

Now I'm wondering what LP in my collection I would want to write one on...

Hey, no spoilers! I'm three or four New Yorkers behind. Although honestly, I think others have already spoiled that one for me.

@UM ohhhh, it's Bill Janovitz. I used to see Buffalo Tom a lot in Boston.

Bill wrote a much bigger Rolling Stones book that came out last year...soft cover came out this year.

What's the funniest and/or most eloquent thing you've ever read about PACKING and MOVING? I am trying to impress an gorgeous lady who is moving soon (fortunately not moving away from NYC though).

Wow, that's a tough one, Ike

@Hyde - that's a very interesting question!
Oddly, I don't think anyone's done any 1 of the Stooges 3 canonical albums yet, or any Iggy solo, which really might be more interesting. Zombie Birdhouse or New Values or Soldier.

But tonight I'm thinking Robyn H - either I Often Dream of Trains or Gotta let This Hen Out.

Maybe I have set the bar too high for myself. Maybe I can find a way to have a conversation and be interesting without any emergency backup material... yeah RIGHT. Pfffft.
