What is R.I.O.?
  1:15pm
Dean:

There is a wonderful (and wonderfully recorded) disc on Winter & Winter, Uri Caine's Wagner e Venezia, that includes bleed-through from other performance spaces in the venue. It's unsettling, but fascinating.
Avatar 1:15pm
northguineahills:

Loving these sounds.
Avatar 1:17pm

@ Carmichael: Yep -- I gave a burn of this cassette to someone at KBOO who does a great Mexican experimental music show. It does say "Classical Achievement Series, Cassette 6666" -- but it's just handwritten.
Avatar 1:17pm
Cecile:

I'll have to preview that, dean. I wasn't too excited by Caine in concert, and his other discs have left me a bit cold

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Jeff Golick:

@Cecile: "The music the record companies don't want you to hear." More here: en.wikipedia.org...
  1:20pm
Dean:

Caine is definitely hit-or-miss in my experience. The Goldberg Variations project, for example, is so wacky-zany-out-there it's worth the price of admission, but I'm such a fan of more, uh, traditional Bach I have a hard time enduring it. But the Wagner record does a good job of invoking time past, which seems to be one of Stefan Winter's happy conceits.
Avatar 1:20pm
Cecile:

oh! That rings a bell now. What a good way to describe that type of music.
Avatar 1:22pm

@Dean: that bleed-thru is a curious-seeming choice for a Winter & Winter project...
Avatar 1:25pm

Methinks this early '80s Mexican scene would be much better known if they hasn't been mostly limited to mega-crappy recording equipment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Rich in Washington:

La Ruleta is indeed amazing. That Alejandro is one cool cat.
  1:26pm
Dean:

@JeffG: It is obviously intentional. W&W recordings, like his earlier JMT ones, are splendidly engineered. I'm sure he intends the effect to add verisimilitude.
Avatar 1:27pm
Cecile:

me too, Tony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah, Dean. That's what I was getting at -- not that it was accidental, but just a surprising choice given how pristine the W&W sound can be.
Avatar 1:29pm
Cecile:

Do Winter & Winter records do better in Europe? I don't mean to be rude, but that label seems like a rich guy's toy to me. But God bless him for giving Tim Berne distribution when a lot of people wouldn't.
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Huh -- I think that bleed-through may be classical music that this comp was taped over. Sheesh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Cecile
Winter & Winter is one of my favorite labels. For many reasons, but primarily and most enthusiastically for providing a steady home base for the great cellist Ernst Reijseger.
  1:35pm
Dean:

Good question. Judging from the distribution of distributors (heh heh), Asia and Europe are more active than North America (distributor in Portland, OR!): http://www.winterandwinter.com/index.php?id=2

And there's a new Reijseger due next year: http://www.winterandwinter.com/index.php?id=49
Avatar 1:36pm

I love the guitarist Marc Ducret, and Winter and Winter has been good to him as well. I'm just wondering about the financials. Which I probably shouldn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm

W&W does indeed seem like a well-funded operation; the packaging is ridiculous. And such that one always knows when one is looking at a W&W release.

I was driving around town a month or so ago with my 8YO when a good station played a killer trio, sax, bass, drums. The drummer in particular was impressive, and I said as much to my kid. We waited for the back-announce. It was Open Loose. "Daddy has that record," I told him proudly. (Turns out I was wrong. I didn't realize OL were so prolific.)
