Cool, glad to hear that... I am enjoying it a lot or "alot"
  1:18pm
Dean:

"A lot" is one of the spelling words on my third grader son's test this week. I spent some quality time with him discussing the space.

nothing like putting in some hard work to the scenario, great show as usual! happy wednesday!

Just remember: "alright" is all right but "alot" is not. Sitting up nice and straight will help you remember.

Amanda:

Love that all of you will stickle for grammar right along side me. Sorry, "a long side"
  1:32pm
Dean:

Then there's the matter of collective nouns in general and whether or when the number of the verb should be singular or plural. Lately, also, I've been seeing a lot (heh heh) of singular pronouns (none, nobody, etc.) taking a verb conjugated for plural. E.g., "None of the zebras are fans of potato dumplings." That's just wrong.
Avatar 1:34pm
northguineahills:

Thank god I have the WFMU app, my laptop decided to reboot right before Simpsons time.
  1:34pm
Sam:

Dean, should we be saying "Yes, there is no banana?"
  1:35pm
Dean:

Only if there is in fact no banana. Also, we could say, "Yes, there is no paint."
  1:35pm
Sam:

I've always wondered why we use the plural when there is none of something, like no bananas.
  1:36pm
Dean:

Grammatical slips are more likely when you're talking bananas, anyway.
  1:39pm
Dean:

You could also split the difference and say, "There is not even one banana."
Avatar 1:40pm
KP:

My grammar stood along side me
Avatar 1:43pm
KP:

I have to go to the Dentists'.
  1:43pm
P-90:

Then there's "their" used as a singular antecedent possesive pronoun, as in "somebody left their umbrella", which has become accepted as correct because "his or her" is too clunky and awkward, and there's no other good substitute. It still sounds wrong somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

Je aime cette chanson très bien!
  1:46pm
Dean:

I'm with you, P-90, but I don't think "his or her" is clunky. It appropriately conveys gender confusion.
  1:49pm
P-90:

"Yes, we have no bananas" (the actual quote) is correct because bananas are counted nouns, unlike "air", "water", or "olive oil", which are not counted and are properly singular in any quantity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Amanda:

If you say "No Homers," you're still allowed to have one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...whereas - there's very little ambiguity if we say Alvin couldn't remember where he'd buried his nuts the night before...

Don't get me started on how many places Alvin has "buried his nuts." Let's just say if there were a Guiness Book of World Records category for "most paternity suits filed against a rodent", I know who would be listed.

Avatar 1:59pm
KP:

One thing i have noticed is commas and periods are commonly misplaced now. I think it might be the influence of UK Tweeters. They put such punctuation outside quotes, which is incorrect over here.

northguineahills:

Thanks Amanda!
Avatar 1:59pm
KP:

Thanks, Amanda. Nice sendoff!
  2:00pm
P-90:

The waiter's "waters" are "glasses of water", therefore properly counted nouns.
Thanks Amanda and everyone!
  2:01pm
Dean:

Ask, KP, and ye shall receive. P-90 placed the comma outside!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm

Cool, chipmunk john! Thanks for that info. I'd presumed that was one that Crispian wrote himself but no...

I'm so tempted to come back on and talk about the piglet/Rhodesian Ridgeback pairing, which I neglected to do. But no... the ship has sailed.
