Billy Jam:

Welcome to this week's installment of the one-hour on a Friday WFMU show "Put The Needle On The Record" that specializes in hip-hop (of all schools) but sometimes wanders off into other musical territory (EG: upcoming Rev Billy and Conspiracy Of Beards as guests shows). Just got back this morning from Northern California to the comparatively (bitterly) cold NY/NJ region. On today's show I will play a freestyle from two days ago recorded at CBCB (Berkeley CA medicinal weed dispensary where was supposed to do last week's show from) with Kenny Loafer, an interview with Senegal rapper/singer/activist Sistah Fa (founder of the grassroots campaign “Education Without Excision”) who is the subject of the acclaimed documentary "Sarabah" that examines her musical life and activist work and how she melds the two together. This interview was recorded last Friday by phone from CA to NY (thanks to Maria Luisa Gambale for recording it on NYC end) - Maria is one of the filmmakers of "Sarabah" that screened last Friday in NYC as part of the United Nation's International Day against genital cutting. Right now Sister Fa is back in Senegal doing her human rights work in building awareness of FGC (female genital cutting). Also on today's show will be in-studio guests MC Rico Sisney & singer Maggie Vagle of hip-hop/funk/jazz ensemble Sidewalk Chalk from Chicago who play Bell House in Brooklyn tonight. And if time allows will play a song in honor (or dishonor) of Valentine's Day tomorrow.
