Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from March 17, 2015 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

This past winter one of my “stuck indoors” pastimes was to setup MAME on my Mac but only with the games I grew up playing. So it’s mainly the dumb video games from the 1970s and early 1980s. No deep plot, but THAT is my video game world. Fascinating how Space Invaders still grabs me, but other games just don’t.

well the Who were first and foremost a pop group that also happened to play really loud live with feedback and stuff. Once you get that you sort of see where the studio albums come from. The Kinks sound more rough than the Who did.
  4:02pm
JakeGould:

For me, I remember first seeing “Chiller”—the arcade game—where you just shoot and mutilate in 8-bit and I wasn’t disgusted by it as much as… Why would I want to spend time doing that? Had to be 1986 when I saw that.
Avatar 4:03pm
Cecile:

yeah, I figured that out finally, dcp.

Yeah, The Who had loud live shows and the craziness of Keith Moon. Otherwise, they weren't very rough or wild.

- It's important that The Wh♂ were the 1st band w/ six-foot amps (Marshal stacks) - when The Beatles were still in suits. The Kinks & Yardbirds were significant too in pioneering what we now call 'Hard Rock' &/or Guitar Rawk. Also the American Garage people like the Sonics (& their antecedents in Rockabilly like Link Wray & Surf like Dick Dale - who would blow amplifiers pushing them). These were the link between the energy of James Brown & Little Richard to the age of Amplifiers...What we think of now as Loud Metallic Rawk didn't begin to even be possible until the late 60s. Then The Wh♂ became pretty Heavy & less Mod; Townshend: 'People like Hendrix & Zep always stole from us - & we always stole back'...

@RRN63: yeah, I think a lot of stuff that we find quite tame was revolutionary and wild at the time. The Who were "the loudest band in the world", but again, mainly in their live shows. Their recordings weren't terribly loud or wild compared to a lot of the stuff out there.

Avatar 4:55pm
Caryn:

@Cecile: no, you can still do that. The prize account where you set up, say a SFL and then pledge that amount in increments over the Marathon is over. However, you can pledge small amounts to individual shows, choose the "bill me" option, and then, when the Marathon is over, have Joe McG add all the pledges together into, say a SFL account and change the "bill me" into a monthly credit card payment. That's what I'm doing. I checked with Joe before the Marathon that that is still possible.
