What happened to your uterus and why wasn't I informed?

No, you shouldn't.

Hi Irwin. Thanks for remembering Stan!

I can't believe Stan's gone, just got the news a few hours ago. Still stunned.

Avatar 3:10pm
glenn:

he was 89 years old. it couldn't have been that much of a shock.
  3:13pm
P-90:

@glenn: There seems to be a naive part of me that halfway expects these folks who are truly immortal to actually live, if not forever, than at least a real, real long time...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Alison Porchnik:

Sorry, that was sort of off topic.

Tony Seymour:

Same riff as Smooth with Santana.....which one was first? Shelia or Santana? Smooth or Leader of the Band?
Avatar 3:14pm
Michael:

Well Alison, Ken had a bit of a vagina theme for a bit this morning so perhaps it's a trend.
Avatar 3:15pm
glenn:

i mean, if the beebs croaked, i'd be a little shocked. but mostly relieved.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Alison Porchnik:

I missed that, Michael, but it doesn't surprise me. Ken and Irwin have synchronous cycles.
  3:25pm
P-90:

@Alison: Thanks for the link so we can all be in on this vagina deal. I can say, for what it's worth, that there is absolutely no physiological basis for the claim that any herb blown into the vagina is going to enter the uterus. Mugwort might be a legitimately beneficial herb, but it can't go where they say it's going via these "treatments."

Laura L:

Glenn, the NYT obit says Stan Freberg was 88; hence the shock. If he were 89, it would be different. But only 88?! Life isn't fair!

We had Freberg's "The United States of America", which I loved as a kid. And still do.

Stan's Caribbean patois seems to owe a lot to the impressionist Puerto Rican speech from a West Side Story...

Ike:

I didn't fully realize that Metric was Canadian until I was in Nova Scotia and heard one of her songs on a top-40 station there. There's no way they would've played anything so good if not for CanCon rules.
Avatar 3:51pm
glenn:

yep. from toronto. otherwise they'd be called imperial.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
rrg:

That's one way of looking at it. The other way of looking at it is that regulation forces them to play a lot of crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Stan Freberg combined voice impression talents w/ great satirism, musical ability, acting...& seems like he was very well-liked personally. When I was very young cassette taped the audio for Looney Tunes cartoon 'Three Little Bops' off TV because I thot it was so damned kewl - never knew it was him 'til today...
- Gratitude & Respect - Stan Freberg.

i'm not even sure if we have cancon requirements any more.

Here's a summary of Canadian radio from a friend of mine:

Good song, good song, Bryan Adams.

Good song, good song, Rush.

Good song, good song, Céline Dion.

According to my brother the DJ there are still Cancon rules.

Canadian Radio is basically: what do we think can be popular in America followed by highly praised nice music made by somebody local.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...most 'radio' anywhere:

corporate crap, corporate crap, corporate crap

corporate crap, corporate crap, corporate crap

corporate crap, corporate crap, corporate crap

...mostly attributable to FCC Deregulation paving the way for even our Music to be bought & sold to the highest bidders...thanks so much...
Avatar 4:01pm
Erella:

Steve Earle, in interview said that the music he was making became more popular in Canada because of CanCon even though he isn't Canadian. In order to get their 30 or 40% Canadian Music in, the radio stations would have to find other music that would bridge nicely. He said that his music sounds good with what the Canadians produce.
  4:05pm
Listener Robert:

Sorry to hear he's gone, but Freberg got up to an age & stayed active long enough that every time I heard him, it was always a surprise that he was still alive.

Early Joe Frank? The pacing suggests a harried reading.

Speaking of a good deal, I got a good deal on aluminum shop lamp reflectors.
  5:04pm
Brendan:

Dude was an excellent strummer
  5:05pm
P-90:

Joe makes very sure-footed choices: Sections with no music bed, switching the narrative tense from past to present, introducing sound effects (like the plane engines) near the end after a whole piece without them.
  5:09pm
P-90:

@Brendan: too bad Dragnet isn't around any more, I can imagine Sgt. Friday lecturing kids on the awful side effects of seeking enlightenment using LEDs.

@Jake: yeah, it's a quasi-steampunk thing, there are whole catalogs and websites now full of fixtures designed to be used with these retro-style bulbs -many if which do produce a pleasing, "organically" warm light.

That track made me curious for a refresher on the origin of mash-ups, so I ended up here:
en.wikipedia.org...
As I thought, Evolution Control Committee did the first real mash-up (not just sampling or blending things) by overlaying Public Enemy onto Herb Alpert. Unless someone else knows something Wiki doesn't....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm
Irwin:

Carl Stalling did mashups for WB cartoons.
  6:02pm
P-90:

Stalling WAS an early practitioner of the mashup, wasn't he?
