Hey Tony. I have no idea why the show started three minutes late. The scheduler in the software is set for 12pm (ET) as always. I can only think that there was some weird blip that occurred at noon that made the ghost in the machine belch.

@Peter Nelson
So Tony's show is going to run three minutes late. Please listen for the end of his show and connect to the stream accordingly. Apologies for the time weirdness!!

I have to run to the dentist in an hour and will be back to spray you all down with sherry vinegar and cumin dust.

He's sounding a bit like Lennon here, no? Is it the accent?
  12:45pm

Sounds like Lennon when he doesn't sound like Eric Carmen or Russel Mael. Maybe Rich Little was in the band?

This is a great band! I vaguely remember the name.
Avatar 12:59pm

Yes -- they are totally fab! There's a double-7" which is easier to find. FMU has a copy of that -- not that that does you any good.
Avatar 1:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Plus, there's stuff under the Amos & Sara name -- like the "Go Home Soldier" 12". Amos has the weirdest, greatest take on dub.

Sare later became a professional wrestler in the U.S. Ken Freedman had her on his show, I think -- or at least met her.

Hey, a question: One way I could start archiving these Tape Hiss shows would be to only play one side of a tape. What think you of that idea?
Avatar 1:36pm
fleep:

Ah, the first Peter Nelson sneak is now archived, yay and thanks.
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

Stick with whole (unarchived) tapes -- or switch to half (archived) tapes? Enquiring minds want to know. Or at least mine does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Charlie:

I've got half a mind to answer that question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Charlie:

And since I've only got half a mind, maybe half a tape would do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Charlie:

I'm kidding actually. It is nice to hear an entire cassette. But then again, hearing half is more than hearing none.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Charlie! Half a mind is a slightly terrible thing to waste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Charlie:

On the bright side, it's much easier to waste half a mind.
  1:50pm
Dr. Beard:

What I the tape is a 4 way split? Does that mean we use a 1/4 of our mind for the whole tape?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
listener james from westwood:

Hearing half one week and the other half the next would certainly build a cliffhanger aspect into the show. But I'm the odd duck who kinda likes the concept of appointment, can't-miss-it radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Charlie:

Enjoying this cassette very much, btw.
Avatar 1:53pm

I like the appointment-radio angle too -- but in the context of FMU, not archiving does sometimes seem a bit perverse.

yes James - tried listening to Reggae schoolroom - and bless his cotton socks there is no playlist - and the dj is so stoned - your are not sure what he is saying when he is reading out what he has played - pity its a great show - probably the best reggae show on the radio - real quality records!
Avatar 1:57pm

Hola, NGH! Yep, Officer! has a bunch of releases, some on vinyl and/or CD.
  1:59pm
Dr. Beard:

Has a hint of Syd imho. Someone walked into my office said sounds a bit like paul simon.
Avatar 2:00pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

talking about copyright - there is a label putting out records of old demo tapes - the label boss received when he worked in a record shop in the early 90s - there is no copyright issue as by their very nature demos are provided by the artist without copyright when they are looking for a record deal.
I doubt the label pays any royalties!
Avatar 2:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Syd, yes, for sure. Paul Simon -- argh ... no, no!
Avatar 2:02pm

@ VANDALISM GENERATOR: Hmm, interesting. Demo tapes do sometimes have copyright symbols on them -- but maybe it's like pretending you have a guard dog when you don't.

Avatar 2:09pm
Peter Nelson:

Actually, in this country the copyright symbol isn't needed...copyright is understood. It depends on the intent of the distributor. Those demo tapes would be covered, but it might be difficult and expensive in court to establish the intent By giving their music away, it could be suggested that the bands intended free distribution. However, making a profit form those demos is probably illegal.
  2:09pm
MrFab:

Thanks for that demo link Tony!
And def. better to post one side than none side.
Avatar 2:10pm
VANDALISM GENERATOR:

the guy who owns the label chopped herring records was called chubby Grooves when he worked at Fat City records in Manchester UK.

The shop had a label also and specialised in hip hop.
They were looking for artists to feature on the label (called grand central) and must have received thousands of demo tapes from mainly New York hip hop bands.

He is now releasing these demo tapes on vinyl at premium prices!
Avatar 2:11pm
Tony Coulter:

So, this live tape reveals that Hermine can't actually "sing" -- but in your humble servant's opinion her personality more than makes up for it.
  2:12pm
Dean:

Copyright doesn't have anything to do with the status as demo of a work. "A copyright is created when it is 'fixed' in a copy or phonorecord for the first time." Phonrecord means CDs, LPs, cassettes, etc. http://copyright.gov/circs/circ56.pdf

non commercial stations like WFMU pay out royalties through a service called Sound Exchange. Their not-for-profit status is rolled into a smaller fee than commercial radio stations. They are subject to regular audits, but that's about it.
