It's a languid yodel. She says yodelayheehoo, then kinda hum-sings it.

people singing yodels without yodeling?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Dan Bodah:

@KG, yep, something like that. Yodels that never quite got off the ground. Or maybe it's like essential oil of yodel.

who's Huun-Huur-Tu?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Dan Bodah:

Huun-Huur-Tu are a group of Tuvan musicians, they have been the main ones making Tuvan throatsinging a known thing in the USA.
  7:22pm
Cliff:

Hi Dan, loving tonight's show so far. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm

I dig throatsinging, despite only having one van.
  7:24pm

So some Tuvan throat singers connected up with some Bulgarian choirists? Totally amazing.

or maybe not joining BT, but rather Chris M, as he fills in for the ailing BT

I first saw Huun-Huur-tu in Hong Kong in 1994. I've seen them several times since, in different countries including USA.
  7:31pm
Cliff:

Whenever I hear Tuvans singing, I always think of Richard Feynman's story about how he and another professor tried to figure out on their own where the hell Tuva was.

@Ike: How’s your 91.1FM signal over there in Sunset Park? Seems weak in Bay Ridge today.

Rich in Washington:

Dan, I was listening to Balkan music on my commute this morning and thought of your show.
What's that vocal thing in some Balkan music that's like male voices doing something that's similar to Indian vocal approximations of tabla playing? Have you heard it?
  7:34pm
Cliff:

Left field?
  7:35pm
JakeGould:

@Cliff: I’m not asking you where left field is… Tuva T-U-V-A! Where?
Avatar 7:36pm
fearfeasog:

this sounds just like people from our former church speaking in tongues
  7:37pm
Cliff:

I know, I was kinda riffing on your joke, but was too drunk to make it work, I guess.
  7:38pm
Cliff:

Cuz Why was playing left field, right?
  7:38pm
marc15:

Catchy
  7:39pm

You’re not as think as you drunk you are.

Also, I've been summoned to Rochester this week for an important work meeting, which must've been set up well in advance, but my manager is being coy about which day it will be. It's givin' me hives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Dan Bodah:

@Rich, I'm not sure -- if you send me a link or an mp3, I'll see if I can figure it out. Or I'll run it by my wife, she used to direct a Balkan choir.
  7:41pm
Cliff:

Good to hear, Jake.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I wonder if auctioneer vocals have ever been set to music. In a similar vein, how about square dance calling?
  7:42pm
Cliff:

It's never a good sign when you're summarily summoned to Rochester out of the blue. It's the Cleveland of Upstate New York, after all.
  7:42pm
Mr. Joe Bob McFred:

Cinefonia!

Dan - Re: Balkan volcalizations - a track was by Fanfare Ciocărlia, who I think are from Romania. I have no idea it it's a traditional style or not. It was on the Borat soundtrack (I found it for a buck somewhere the other day).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My understanding is - Tabla players have five (?) or so distinct sounds they make that are like two-letter syllables (?) - & part of the tradition of being taught by a master in the uninterrupted line is - you have to be able to vocalize any pattern before you drum it...which is fairly beatbox...
