I Want More (Clams)
  3:24pm
Mark:

That was always the theory rw. Nobody knows for sure.
  3:25pm
P-90:

rw: The story goes that it's a nonsense syllable :"groose!" but after everybody and his sister thought it was "Bruce", the band changed it and started singing it that way in performances. If you believe Jeff Lynne.
  3:29pm
Dean:

But "groose" is not nonsense. It means "to shiver," as in a fit.
  3:30pm
Mark:

Doesn't really make sense in the context of the song, though, does it, Dean? (Not to over-analyze an ELO song, which I think I just did!)
  3:32pm
Dean:

I'm with you Mark, in over-analysis-land, that is. First verse:

You got me runnin' goin' out of my mind,
You got me thinkin' that I'm wastin' my time.
Don't bring me down, no no no no no,
I'll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don't bring me down.

Sounds like a fit to me!
  3:33pm
P-90:

Actually, per Lynne, it's an Australianism derived from "gross", as in "unpleasant and undesirable." Apparently like being "let down," by Bruce or whomever...
Avatar 3:34pm
Cecile:

Jeff Lynne, call in and tell us the rest of the story
  3:35pm
Mark:

We know you're listening, Jeff, so don't even...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Webhamster Henry:

If you ARE listening, Jeff, how about a pledge?
  3:36pm
Dean:

I'm just grateful ELO didn't cover Mairzy Doats.
  3:36pm
Nervy:

I thought it was "truce." Like, call a truce and don't hassle me any longer.
  3:36pm
Mark:

Yeah Jeff, nothing unreasonable, just like a million dollars.
Avatar 3:37pm
V Priceless:

Leland Palmer owns Mairzy Doats, Dean.
  3:37pm
Mark:

$1 million would almost reach Scott's goal for this week. Make him a hero!
  3:38pm
Dean:

Then Leland Palmer should pledge, too.

Ah: "The avant-garde band The Residents recorded the song for their 1986 album Stars & Hank Forever: The American Composers Series, replacing its original backing music with the bassline of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. High school history class, back in the old days, we sat in the back of class and abruptly, rudely, and mischievously placed The Osmonds' "One Bad Apple" 45rpm on the classroom turntable set to 33rpm midway through the teacher's lecture. He kinda got a kick out of it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Scott Williams:

that was a crappy Paul Mauriat project called "Les Satelites" - the song was "Dum Dum". I played it off center, of course. FOR CLAMS!

Playing 45s off-center was my favorite way to play them as a kid.
Or playing a 12" record with a 7 or 10 inch record layed on top to act as a locked groove when the needle came to the edge of it.
I think my brother and I destroyed lots of our parent's records that way.

Off center, just like us!
Also diggin' this PLU/Ergo project! Probably have heard this before on another show, but this arrangement rocks!

"Rosalie "Rosie" Méndez Hamlin was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on July 21, 1945, to a Mexican mother and an Anglo-American father. She spent part of her childhood between Anchorage, Alaska and California, before her family moved to National City, California. She started singing with a band at thirteen. She wrote the lyrics for "Angel Baby" as a poem for "my very first boyfriend" when she was 14 years old, still attending Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California."
