The thing about Terrorists - whether foreign or domestic : it's like Woody Allen said about 9/11: for 1,000s there, it's a tragedy - but on the big map of millions - this is the exception - a pinprick - & they ain't done crap, man. They blow their wad - kill a few of the wrong people - & then they go down.

I think Vietnamese has the most tones of any language - 5? I think. Chinese has 3, I believe. I'm trying to see if I can hear anything like that in the music tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

I didn't know that, Erik; I know Lao has tones, but I didn't know Vietnamese did. It's hard for me to hear them in regular speech, let alone singing!
  7:24pm
Erik B.:

I know. In native speakers, hear 0 tones. This guy is the Shaggy of Vietnam!

Rap was invented by Francis Poulenc. He composed a ballet, the choral portions of which were later covered by a famous Hawai'ian pop singer: "Les Biches" and Ho.

Ha! Hey, you are so lucky to live so close to Minneapolis -- last time I was there, I was taken to that street (name of which I forget) with all of the Vietnamese stores and restaurants. Insanely great food and I found some music while I was there

Thanks for the tip on Chicago - I like to go down there every so often to bum around, buy records, etc. But I wasn't familiar with the neighborhood you mentioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm

Aren't they terrific? I had the oppty to buy actual CDs of theirs while I was in Japan, but I didn't, and didn't figure out what their music sounded like until I came home and DLed their catalog off of a couple of no-longer-active blogs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm

It's worth going to, Polyus -- several stores and restaurants, and if you walk to the main street running perpendicular to Argyle, turn left, and go down a bit, there's a really great Thai market, also with music

I googled it a bit - apparently Khanh Ly came to the Expo '70 in Osaka (the first world fair in Asia) and performed that song, seems like that's when/why she had the lyric half translated to Japanese for the audience.

Our favorite restaurant in NYC was a Vietnamese place. For a long time it was called simply Vietnam, but later it changed to Doyers--the name of the street it was on. The place closed about two weeks before we moved to Pittsburgh. We went there so often, the waiters would yell out in their partial Englsih, "Spring Roll Girl!!" when my daughter walked through the door. When the place closed, we saw that as a sign that moving was the right choice. Once in Pittsburgh, the restaurant that was recommended to us most often was a family-style Vietnamese joint that has come to be our favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. Thank you for reading my little story.

I don't know of any really good full-service Vietnamese restaurants in NYC. There are lots of Vietnamese places but they're all kind of disappointing. But we do have awesome bánh mì here in Sunset Park, Bklyn.
