NB: Today's cassettes are all unreleased. Three are live concert recordings, the other is an unreleased album. None of them have covers, or list track titles — so my typing fingers will be taking a vacation today.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
coelacanth:

hey Tony...
i was listening to radio boredcast last friday and didn't see the info to a track i really dug, playing c.7:50 pm. i guess that's Vicky's thing, but it was your voice shortly before it. i listened for (well)over an hour more- even when i wanted to do something else! but there was no back-announce in sight. (it was right before "flight of fancy" by Stephan Dillemuth.) is there any way??
(...it was an instrumental,i believe; and very percussive with clanging things that sounded like pipes and pans and such.)
  12:38pm
Dean:

Thanks, coelacanth, for reminding me that I'd asked Doug Schulkind about the tune that played immediately after Uncle Michael's program last Friday on the GTDR stream. He was in transit and, I think, forgot to check. It sounded like something off Bailey/Metheny's "Sign of Four."
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

@ coelacanth: Yeah, I did do a segment for Radio Boredcast -- can't tell anything from the times you mention, though, as it's not always on at the same time (my same segment keeps repeating).

Sounds like maybe it was the last piece of my shift? (Just because I didn't return to the mic.) Here's the playlist: wfmu.org...
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

As I mentioned earlier, the guitarist on this Illegal Aliens tape is Steve "Wayside Music" Feigenbaum. I imagine at least some of you have bought something from Steve over the years. He has sent a ton of releases to FMU, including prizes come marathon time. (Thanks, Steve!)
Avatar 12:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh, his label is Cuneiform -- the distro is called Wayside Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
coelacanth:

Thanks Tony! i'll check it out.
  12:48pm
Dean:

The Szemzó and the Ferrari both have vocals, though, and not so much "clanging"...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
coelacanth:

i just checked them out. i bookmarked Ferrari, but it's not anything on that playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
coelacanth:

Dean i think your chances are good! Doug will know... but i doubt it was part of Tony's program and i've got the impression that radio boredcast is randomly generated and there's no daily playlist. (correct,Tony?)
anyway,Thanks for trying.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Not sure if it's randomly generated. I think it just cycles through everything on an endless loop. Could be wrong, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
coelacanth:

i've liked this entire tape by the way!
Avatar 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it! It's got pretty good sound quality, all things considered. I've got lots of concert tapes I don't think I'll ever play on this show just because their sound quality is too crappy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
coelacanth:

well,Thanks. i'll contact Vicky. if that's true, maybe i can just ("just!") look through every playlist from 3-10-12.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm

there's a hint of Miles throughout this tape,i think...and a lesser hint of Zappa.

Dean:

@coelacanth: I just searched for occurrences of dillemuth or "flight of fancy" at wfmu. Here's the playlist where it occurred in 2012: https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/45594 Dillemuth's "Lost" precedes "Flight of Fancy." It sounds like clanging, but it's nowhere near an hour long. Of course, it's possible that when you heard FoF Radio Boredcast *was* a random assortment, rather than a complete replay of a program.
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Muffin Ma: Indeed! (Greets, too!)
  1:11pm
Dean:

Oh, wait. You weren't looking for an hour-long piece. You were waiting for a back-announce. Dillemuth's "Lost," then?

Didn't Cuneiform put out some Happy the Man? I'm thinking "Crafty Hands", for one.
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Yep. they did indeed put out some Happy the Man. Not "Crafty Hands," though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
coelacanth:

Dean Thanks -but that's not it either. it doesn't seem like something that would be on do or diy; whereas Dillemuth does...which is why i thought each track on the boredcast is randomly selected.
in fact, flight of fancy was followed by 5-6 tracks that didn't flow together very well; followed by over an hour of a Laurie Anderson "talk" (about basically nothing)
...'seems pretty random!
- i'm letting this go for now!
  1:37pm
Dean:

Yeah, I made another oversight in forgetting to factor in your having heard Tony just prior to the track in question. This wouldn't have occurred had the playlists simply cycled through.

I thought this Internet thing was supposed to guarantee perfect information forever.

@ Carmichael: Here's a (fine) Happy the Man thing Cuneiform put out: www.discogs.com...

I thought that the name 'Rhythm Plague' sounded vaguely familiar so I looked 'em up: yep, not only from LA but featuring Nels Cline (waaaay before he became Mr Superstar Rock Star with Wilco) and Vinny Golia. Really digging this.
Avatar 2:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, MrFab!!
  2:06pm
Dean:

There's this, which refers to an (unseen, and therefore perhaps only the cassette) LP, and includes the tune from the compilation: http://www.cvltnation.com/a-portrait-of-los-angelespost-punk-underground1977-1987vol-6-article-download/ I recall hearing one or both Clines at a small theater space at a mall in Pasadena, mid-'90s, with a tuba player (memory fails me), G.E. Stinson, and maybe even Liebig. Lotsa qualifications there. Maybe it's all just a vestige of an Angel concert.

So, I've decided to put together a comp of Japanese stuff from the '80s for my next marathon premium. Many of you are gifted punsters/wordplayers, so I'll throw this question out to you: Any suggestions for a good catchy title that doesn't mention "rising sun" or "yen"?
Avatar 2:49pm
Cecile:

Who was in Rhythm Plague?
Avatar 2:49pm
Cecile:

how about Ooh Mami! (umami)
Tasty Japanese riffs from the 80s
Avatar 2:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey Cecile!

Rhythm Plague was Nels Cline, Wayne Peet, & Steuart Liebig (aka "Steubig") ... plus others, sometimes, I guess...
Avatar 2:52pm
Cecile:

Ha! I thought it was either him or the Regressive Aid dudes.
  2:53pm
MrFab:

Avant-Gardzilla? (sorry)

Sushi Mask Replicas. (oi, that was even worse. I'll stop now)
Avatar 2:54pm
Mayuko:

All that came to my mind right now is something like El Matcha y la Nena ((c) Liaisons Dangereuses)... something Macho = Matcha (tea)... just thinking out loud. The problem would be the Japanese 80's is far from macho, haha.
Avatar 2:56pm
Cecile:

maybe it doesn't have to be pun-based. maybe there is a translated Japanese phrase that would work.
Avatar 2:56pm
Mayuko:

But probably if they're matcha, they are not macho anyway. Matcha tea is used for traditional tea ceremony FYI. not sure how popular it is in the US...
Avatar 2:57pm
Cecile:

From what I have gleaned from the wikis, karaoke means "empty orchestra" in Japanese. That could be a cool title.
Avatar 2:58pm
Cecile:

I love matcha. Of course I get the ground up kind you can dissolve in cold water. it's becoming more popular over here.
Avatar 2:58pm
Tony Coulter:

The one time I attended a tea ceremony, the green tea was so strong it was practically like crack.
Avatar 2:59pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks for the title suggestions everyone! Keep 'em coming!
Avatar 3:00pm
Mayuko:

I'm actually assuming some people did have druggy experience in tea ceremony especially when it's done in a tea room like this: pds.exblog.jp...
