I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

The image on the playlist today:

“Norakuro” was a Japanese manga(comic book) series created by Suihō Tagawa and very popular among kids. Started in 1931, had run through 1941 until it got banned. The main character Norakuro was a soldier serving in an army of dogs called the "fierce dogs brigade" modeled after Japanese army. But I’ve read that it seemed the real military people of the JP empire didn’t like Norakuro - they thought it was insulting to them that Norakuro the soldier always do funny silly things and make mistakes all the time. So it was written in the way to excite kids for the war but ended up being banned by the military (there are some other theories to explain why it was banned, this is one of them.) Norakuro is an orphan so he doesn’t have a family who would miss him if he dies in a battle, nor would be happy to hear he gets promoted...

One of short animation films of Norakuro www.youtube.com...

Hello Ken, Polyus, thank you for tuning in!! Gary, I think Tadanori Yokoo participated this album making music with Toshi (although not sure how large his contribution was...) He is indeed known much more for his art, but he worked with Haruomi Hosono on Cochin Moon too so he's got some music stuff in his career... sort of.

Oh, cool -- I didn't know that

... except Tadanori Yokoo didn't stay until the finish of Cochin Moon and Hosono had to finish it by himself... so it's credited as his solo album... I red it recently in Hosono san's interview and it was very funny.

North Guinnea Hills - I have an official DVD collection of all the original Popeye 33-38. You can find it on Amazon.

My recollection is that the conductor/automated voice announcing stations in Japan always sounded like Popeye. just say Shinjuku in Popeye's voice and you'll understand

The very best Popeyes are the ones from the early 30's,pre war.
Those are surreal and funny. The gags are visual, not military.
Those are b&w and the drawing is simultaneously beautiful and funny.

That Wada track was great, thanks for playing the whole of it. And that Kame Itokazu song... so beautiful. We talked about Beauty last week, this song reminded me of "a pile of time", there was a very similar vocal part in that song.

@fred ohh, Denseland is playing at Sonic Protest, wish I could go see too. Kame Itokazu is great, she was born in 1915 and passed away in 1991... I don't understand why it seems like there is no solo album of her. I've heard her only in compilations. anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you had a beautiful day. You were born on April 8th? That's also Buddha's birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
fred:

Caryn told me about that (Buddha's birthday in Japan), which is somehow fitting because I saw Circle yesterday and they were totally awesome. Finnish greatness as a bridge between Japan and France, with the US thrown in and other countries welcome. That's how it should be
