Good Evening James and all! Enjoy!

Is this your first WFMU show that comes around Derby Day? Does it get as hectic as it sounds like it does down there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
KimSorise:

Yes, this is my first show during derby for WFMU but I have had many others - It can get pretty nuts if you are into all of that. I often just try to pick up as many extra paying DJ gigs as I can. Work a bunch prior to Derby but post race on Saturday it begins to die down - folks have been drunk and partying for close to 2 weeks at that point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
coelacanth:

good evening Kim and Greasers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
KimSorise:

I haven't been to the Derby in years, but there are usually cool shows and whatnaut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
coelacanth:

this rules!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
KimSorise:

Thank you Coel! Welcome back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
listener james from westwood:

Glad it's a potential DJing opportunity! Always nice to have an annual event that brings a bit coin into the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
KimSorise:

Right! It is like having NYE twice a year - that way. Lots of private gigs and my regular nights can and will pay more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
KimSorise:

And I get Friday off for Oaks Day... All the schools close so their parents can drink & gamble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
listener james from westwood:

Belmont is run far enough from me that we don't see much of the action in NJ (over on Long Island). Even the Super Bowl being in my county didn't really create anything like the Derby in our area, and it's just 30 min from me. Although my landlord did warn us all against AirBnB'ing our apartments for desperate football fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
listener james from westwood:

Ah, now that's a holiday I can get behind. (I remember now that I saw the Belmont run in a Vegas sportsbook once, and it was utterly bozo-berserk there. Also it was a massive upset and folks were not pleased.)
  7:19pm
Jeff g.:

Phil Cohran is unsung -- even relative to the overall unsung levels of improv in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
KimSorise:

Yeah- AirBnB at Derby is nuts! Folks pull $500 + night for small houses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
KimSorise:

I love Cohran - I think I have 4 or 5 LPs, my buddy who owns a record store in Rogers Park in Chicago says he is at his shop all the time... He lives down the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
listener james from westwood:

Hunter Thompson described folks making bank just letting out their lawns as parking. "Yep, just park right on top of the flowers, don't worry" (cash register noise)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
KimSorise:

Yep
  7:30pm
Jeff g.:

Yowza! What shop is that??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
listener james from westwood:

Oh hells yes to the Record Fair. Now THAT is a horse to bet on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
KimSorise:

Funk Trunk Record - super tiny shop; serious selection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
KimSorise:

(S) - oops

D a v i d:

Finally this show is living up to its title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
listener james from westwood:

That was a lot of fun even though I speak not a bit of Thai!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
KimSorise:

Thanks James! It's a fun LP. Happy to oblige David... At times I change it up - Global music can be from anywhere, yes?
  7:44pm
D a v i d:

Yes but the name of this show is misleading. I expect it to be something like Bodega Pop. I will say that you have one of the best radio voices ever though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
KimSorise:

I appreciate your feedback, but I do want the show to represent jams both domestic and foreign... it should showcase all types of music, and as much as I love Bodega Pop I wouldn't want GG to sound like anything other than what it does. But speaking direct to your comment, I haven't played "international sounds" in a few weeks. Anyway, hope you enjoy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
listener james from westwood:

I always like where this program roams, no matter how wide the circle it scribes on the globe!
  8:01pm
D a v i d:

Sorry, I know the tone of my message is smart-alecky.. world music programs are few and far between though. I can hear Miles Davis on a hundred shows. And yes, all the dee jays at GTD Radio play whatever they feel. That's good and not so good. Mayuko has refused to play music that I requested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Fadoul is wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
KimSorise:

No worries whatsoever. I like my shows to be organic. Some are planned - some not. It often depends on how Monday goes. If you listen back through the archive you will find many many international shows. The only thing I can guarantee is that each show begins with a jazz piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
KimSorise:

Fadoul is amazing! Thanks Andrew
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
melinda:

I like that you include domestic in the global, sort of forces us to rethink what global means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
melinda:

Impala Syndrome is a great name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
KimSorise:

Yes, it is Melinda! Surprised no one has tried to "borrow" it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
coelacanth:

on "global"...
"The UN proposal of 1982 would create a socialistic system of control and regulation of the seas. It embodied an outmoded 1970s view of the world, where the United States was a part of a global community. Reagan would not approve the convention. If the nation was to realize the full potential of President Reagan's vision, we must create a forward-looking oceans policy that serves the many and complicated interests of the United States' people specifically."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
coelacanth:

- and this attitude that reagan instilled in the masses is why we're where we're at today....in deep shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hi Kim! I'm enjoying this international trip today!

Exactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm

And depending on which country we're waving them at, the extended finger can vary...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm

wow, time flies when you're playing in the dirt (& sowing seeds) and the music's good.
- Thanks Kim!
ciao peeps.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm

Sorry, the tail end of the Francis Bebey piece "Africa Sanza"
