Good morning Nate. I'm happy to see you're staying put in the new schedule
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05am
Nate K.:

Happy Labor Day folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05am
pacific standard simon:

Roddy McDowell, so butch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10am
pacific standard simon:

Not sure how much of this Suzanne Ciani track is pre-Terry Riley, and how much is post-Terry Riley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16am
Nate K.:

@Pacific. It's 1975 if that helps at all. Probably post?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17am
pacific standard simon:

If you're interested in the assignment of call letters by the FCC, note that KBAI is a station in Bellingham, WA that broadcasts left-wing talk and minor league baseball.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19am
Nate K.:

"Keep an eye on those commie BAIs fellas."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21am
fred:

@pss: I'm actually interested. I thought W was required on the east coast and K on the west, but I wonder where the dividing line stands. And whether there is another first letter in the middle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21am
pacific standard simon:

I saw that, Nate, but Riley's music did change a little in the mid-70s. Hence my confusion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22am
Sem Chumbo:

@fred: I think it is the Mississippi River.
Hiya, Nate, and Burners everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23am
fred:

clicky star for this Cate Le Bon track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24am
pacific standard simon:

@fred - The dividing line is the Mississippi River, but there are exceptions on both sides. C is for Canada, and X is for Mexico.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28am
Sem Chumbo:

An interesting radio call sign here in Canada predates Newfoundland's entry into the country (1949).
VOCM, St. John's , Newfoundland, standing for the "Voice of the Common Man."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29am
pacific standard simon:

3-letter call signs still exist, passed down from the old days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36am
fred:

Interesting stuff, but I still wonder why these call letters were mandated in the first place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40am
pacific standard simon:

Take a look at this, Fred:

It's kinda weird that May 1st is "labor day" in some countries and not the US, even though the May 1st date comes from the US
Avatar 6:44am
duke:

Happy Sunday Nate and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44am
fred:

@pss: That makes sense. I guess we never had these in France because all radio stations were state-controlled until the early 80's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am
Nate K.:

I feel like May 1 is the Labor Day that makes people nervous; our late summer Labor Day is the get drunk-and-grill, keep-'em-in-line Labor Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am
Nate K.:

If that makes any sense...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47am
pacific standard simon:

May 1st is a pagan holiday, having nothing to do with labor or workers. Stolen, just like Christmas, by ideologues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47am
fred:

@Nate: It does (especially the keep-em-in-line part). Part of the weirdness is that very few people around here know about the haymarket connection
Avatar 6:49am
duke:

The Stones don't sound like they really like working people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50am
fred:

@pss: I once had a calendar that featured holidays (primarily New Year) from many cultures. Basically every day had an excuse to get drunk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51am
Nate K.:

@Duke, I find this to be maybe their most questionable song in terms of credibility. Worse than "Street Fighting Man"...but I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52am
pacific standard simon:

Dance around the maypole. Hooray, hooray, it is the first of May -- outdoor fucking starts today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55am
fred:

@Nate: I feel like the Stones and cred only go together with a negative connective
Avatar 6:56am
duke:

I think the Stones are great but I don't believe them. If Otis Redding sings Pain in My Heart, I believe he knows exactly what he is sing about, If Mick sings it, I think he has studied it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58am
Nate K.:

@Duke, I'd say I'm more or less in agreement. I think if Mick were to sing a song about hedge fund investing, I'd believe it. I also think that when they cover songs by their idols, they really mean it, though.
Avatar 7:00am
duke:

Do you have any good hedge fund investing tunes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03am
pacific standard simon:

I think the Stones have a lot of credibility at their most misogynistic -- that's where they really are -- but I try not to think about it to much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03am
fred:

When the Stones rip off their idols, they mean it. When they feel someone ripped off one of their songs and they sue, boy do they mean it.
The Monty Python ad was hilarious, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04am
pacific standard simon:

I really need to go to bed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Harry Shearer ('Le Show') did a really great Stones parody song - 'Refined Sugar' - about Rupert Murdoch marrying Jerry Hall...Muddy Waters: 'The Stones stole my music but gave me my name.'...Beatles were lower class looking to Achieve & be taken seriously - The Stones were Middle class Southerners looking to go boho. Missions accomplished all around I figure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like Charlie Watts is into Civil War memorabilia - so always this thing w/ British Blues like it's a study or fashion - but if so they are dedicated!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06am
Dave in Vermont:

fuck yeah, Nate K.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

MayDay is under Taurus, & Labor Day under Virgo - both Earth Signs that correlate to Labor pretty well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Taurus is havin' thangs & eating, earning - Virgo is service & class & labor more exactly...
Avatar 7:09am
duke:

I recently watched a James Brown biography. There was a segment about the TAMI show. It was interesting to see the Stones follow JB on the closing segment. No one can follow Jame Brown. I give them credit for not just giving up,.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

James & Tina deffo opened people's eyes about Performance. Like when Hendrix arrived in England after apprenticing in the Chitlin Circuit, & all these guys that had learned off records were stunned by his moves...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13am
fred:

May 1st used to be the only day my workplace is closed (and even enforcing that led to a conflict). Now with terror alerts all the time you have to get approval to get in at night or on weekends. It sucks because I crashed there a few time after shows that ended late
Avatar 7:17am
duke:

I have Labor Day off, but thanks to e-mail, an online forum that I have to monitor, remote access etc. It's not really a holiday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - as long as the Murican hyper-working lifestyle brings us all this peaceful, rich, egalitarian lifestyle & Happiness in Society that make us feel so very successful & fulfilled both materially & spiritually - it's OK I guess...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38am
fred:

@RevRab: I work in a weird place, there are few morning people, and access to studios used to be a welcome perk. Contemporary music composers usually don't care about regular hours, and they kinda set the clock here. So I can show up at noon and nobody bats an eye
Avatar 7:53am

Happy Hurricane, Nate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54am

Thank, KP. My umbrella will be put to the test in about an hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57am

'Happy Hurricanes'. Hm...

I saw the Stones in a tremendous show at the Meadowlands during a raging tropical storm. When Mick sang, "I howled at the wind and rain" you believed him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
Nate K.:

@KP that would have been something to see, I'm sure.
Avatar 8:30am

What's work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am

Following the U.S. electoral process from outside the country @KP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am

Sem - it's like a life sentence here, I assure you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am

Have a good one, folks. Thanks for the kind words and the healthy conversation.
