Good morning. Just tuned in and saw that you played a Leonard Nimoy tune earlier. Coincidentally, I just finished watching the new documentary produced by his son. For project supporters with a link (and others???), it can be seen on Vimeo. Comprehensive and fair look at the him the person and Spock the character.

I would say they both can go hand and hand. but generally, rocksteady is a taste slower with slightly more going on with percussion. so therefore, most of this has been rocksteady i would venture. all great tho

  10:25am

@thisguy... thanks. i have a hard time identifying and dont know what the criteria are. - my baseline is 'seacruise.' the beat has a certain 'push' a locomotion; oont-h-ahta, oont-h-ahta... that groove, at that tempo - and under - interests me. - is the slower stuff all calypso derivative? - thank you.

Greg from ZONE 5:

Ska is the one that sounds like the Jamaican version of "Sea Cruise"…uptempo and fun. Rocksteady slowed it down and lost the horns. I heard that that happened because the summer of 66 was so hot in Jamaica that everybody—the musicians and the dancers—slowed down. No foolin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am

  10:33am
nickrhombi:

@cecile, thanks... i am really unfamiliar with the terminology. i tend to like the older, slower records...and i sense that maybe some of these categories are pretty elastic... 'ska' for example seems to have a broad margin, but generally faster tempo it seems...
Avatar 10:33am
pierre:

and they all more or less come from a mix between mento, calypso, and soul music.

@Cecile - Dilla did a remix of She Said, but it's not this version. I think the Dilla remix is on 45...or maybe only 12". I know there's at least one Pharcyde 45, anyway.
