Welcome, @Melinda, and all the other horsepersons out in Drummer-land.

melinda:

I like the peppy background music. Like a Hawaiian Tijuana Brass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Sam Segal:

My thoughts exactly, @Ike!

Doug Schulkind:

A horse is a horse, of course of course.

Unless you've lost it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Sam Segal:

This program has always stood staunchly behind the opinion that a Horse is Not a Horse, @Doug. Glad you agree.

First Nations Indigenous Peoples Arts and Crafts...in case there are Canadian commenters.

Please, Canadians, if you're out there, show yourselves. Hi, @G!

Those horses are in the back because the cab's too short for driving.

I had to take a year of Latin after 3 years of Spanish in elementary school, and I think it broke the momentum of Spanish language acquisition. Not that I would be fluent if it weren't for that, I'm terrible at practicing the language, too self-conscious.

Someone's playing spoons in the background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
melinda:

Brute Force Steel Band is a funny name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Sam Segal:

The reason I never retained any Latin, @Melinda, was because it was far to easy to cut corners on the homework by looking up the English translation of whatever famous Roman text we were translating that week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
melinda:

Corner-cutting is all too tempting.

Alex In Illinois:

When I took Latin, they never really taught us to speak it. Spanish was the opposite. Day 1, the teacher held up letters of the alphabet and spoke them, and we had to respond speaking. Also, in Spanish, we learned words for modern things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
melinda:

I envy polyglots and people with a facility for learning languages easily. because I find languages interesting, studies some linguistics in college, but study and practice don't come easily to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
melinda:

@Alex: that's another downside of Latin. We spoke it in class, but no one really speaks it outside of a classroom so practice opportunities are limited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome to the Horse Party, @Alex! My Latin teachers always tried to pitch us on the idea that Latin only exists in the modern day as a language that's read, never spoken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
melinda:

My 7th grade Latin teacher used the Cambridge Latin course booklets and tape recordings, which were kind of fun. They were about the activities of a Roman family with servants.

howdy Sam, wranglers...
Avatar 10:27pm
northguineahills:

I dated/married a Mexican girl for 9 years, and although I picked up most of the vocabulary, I had problems understanding more then a few sentences at a time when it was spoken, due to all of the slang, and I interpret each word individually and literally. I can barely speak it, as I have no idea how to conjugate verbs, but I can read a Spanish newspaper no problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Sam Segal:

Hola, @coelacanth and @ngh!

(@ngh, could you translate what I just said for our friend @coelacanth?)
Avatar 10:34pm

jaja. Sam, jaja!
Avatar 10:34pm

Norberto Lobo gorgeous guitar. :D
Avatar 10:35pm
geezerette:

jajaja! ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
melinda:

In spite of knowing Spanish pronunciation, when I see 'jaja' I read it as German.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Alex In Illinois:

@Sam Segal: Eventually, the school district Latin teacher made that idea clear, but that was not a selling point. At least it gave me experience in conjugating verbs for Spanish.
Avatar 10:41pm
northguineahills:

The first time I met my wife's parents in Mexico (and it was w/o her, as she had visa issue), my attempts to speak Spanish were peppered w/ German, French and Japanese, as my brain wasn't differentiating foreign words. Took 3 days to speak like a four-year-old, a week to speak gringo Spanish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Doug Schulkind:

Anagram for Space Race.... GO!

Peace scar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
melinda:

That's funny, NGH.
Avatar 10:45pm
geezerette:

Melinda,I spent some time with a Mexican friend in Mexico.
I spent the whole time saying,"Lo siento, no habla Espanol" which seemed to make people think I really did, maybe just had a small vocabulary. Every time I said it someone would start a very animated conversation with me. It was a very funny trip.
Avatar 10:48pm
northguineahills:

I dig this DjRum, it has an late 90s yet contemporary vibe to it. (almost sounds like Mike Paradinas)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
melinda:

@geezerette: jajaja! my pronunciation is better than my vocabulary, so I can see getting into that sort of situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Sam Segal:

I can hear that, @NGH. Have you heard this new Paradinas and Richard D. James collab? I haven't heard it yet myself but I'm hopeful it'll live up to what it could be.
Avatar 10:55pm
northguineahills:

@Nope, but they did rerelease the old Mike & Rich record from '95.
Avatar 10:55pm
geezerette:

@Melinda, exactly! I said "Que?" so often they probably thought I was hard of hearing. :D

This music makes me want a mescal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Sam Segal:

@NGH: Oh...that's probably what I'm thinking of. Didn't realize it was a reissue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
melinda:

I dream of some day improving my Spanish, or doing an immersion project in Germany (I have a cousin there) and picking up some German. Right now I'm too foggy to retain much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Sam Segal:

I apologize, @Melinda. This music may only make you even foggier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
melinda:

It's ok, I like repetitive trancey stuff.

Just reading the comments, I realize I can speak Korean and German fairly fluently. Can't read or write either, but I can jabber like a drunken monkey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm

i, too, can jabber like a drunken monkey.
(not in korean or german though)
