Evening, Jesse and all!

Hi there James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
coelacanth:

greetings Jesse and invisible listeners
- checking in but may not be here long. i always like to here this though. from sri lanka, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
coelacanth:

d'oh! hi james
Avatar 7:13pm
Jesse K:

Hi coelacanth! I think Indonesia but could be wrong..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
coelacanth:

...so that looks like indonesian. i get the music confused with another tape i have from sri lanka.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Who has stayed up all night @ a Gamelan concert? I have!
Avatar 7:20pm
Jesse K:

Yeah, that first track is definitely from a tape.
Howdy Rev Rabbit! I surely haven't but it's on the list..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
coelacanth:

Jesse, i'm not home or i'd get the title. maybe it's the same album...but the tape i have has two 1/2-hour sides of very close variations on that track you played. it's very good for falling asleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
coelacanth:

the one i get it confused with also varies little from beginning to end, and it's mostly acoustic stringed instruments...augmented by the sound of an infant crying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

An interesting thing about Gamelan is it's a little bit like one enormous percussion instrument - but must be played by several people in synch...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...correct me if that's too general...)
Avatar 7:31pm
Jesse K:

That sounds right up my alley coelacanth! More babies crying the better.. Add some birds or cows in the background and it's perfect!
Avatar 7:33pm
Jesse K:

@Rev Rabbit, that's my understanding. Like a percussion ensemble. Some are pretty large I think. I've really only ever seen non-traditional gamelans in person
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
coelacanth:

haha! it definitely has birds!
-and at the fade of one track can be heard the baby laughing contentedly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

When I lived in Santa Barbara, CA - there were possibly two local Gamelan societies - one official UCSB & another a rogue splinter group by some guy. I used to see a lot of World Music when I lived there (sigh)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
coelacanth:

i've actually never seen a gamelan performance, though i've tinkered with a few of the different instruments a few times. i was invited to join a gamelan orchestra in upstate ny but unfortunately the rehearsal nights are on a week night (tuesday?) when i'm out of town, working.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The all-night show I saw was in a traditional format - w/ a shadow play too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
coelacanth:

i so hate to leave when you're playing this, but i must.
i'll be back in a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...we'll notate all the important variations for you...
Avatar 7:57pm
Jesse K:

@Rev Rabbit, that must have been super great! Was napping frowned upon?
@coelacanth, we'll be here for you when you return!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Few were the enduring - no nappers among them.
Avatar 8:07pm
Ike:

Hey!
Avatar 8:09pm
Jesse K:

Howdy Ike!
Avatar 8:09pm
Jesse K:

For some reason I do really like the idea of napping during music performances, so that it can get in your dreamstate

Public service announcement: I am still here.

This has been a public service of the Ike Public Service Service. Servicing you since right now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
coelacanth:

public service (or disservice, depending on your perspective) announcement: i am back.

RR, i'm ready for my briefing.
Avatar 9:18pm
Jesse K:

Thanks everyone, I feel very well serviced
@coelacanth, we transitioned from banging on bells to synth bells to banging on boxes and things and soon to be bowing boxes and bells are coming back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
coelacanth:

Thank you. now that i'm up to speed i can make the informed decision to give this episode a gold star and revisit it in the near future. (rather than the intuitive one to do the same, that i would've made)
Avatar 9:27pm
Jesse K:

I can't promise it will be the same on a later visit but pretty sure it won't change that much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
coelacanth:

are you planning to insert adverts for fastfood, pharmaceuticals and overpriced automobiles?
Avatar 9:31pm
Jesse K:

Probably not but I am using photos of food from Mugaritz so..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
coelacanth:

{i was just about to post this...}

so, are these images a quiz? - cuz it's a tough one.
Avatar 9:35pm
Jesse K:

If you can get entree, appetizer or dessert I'd be impressed.

Jesse K:

They're perfect little sculptures
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
coelacanth:

that they are.
i may be able to identify a few ingredients... but i was thinking asian, so maybe they're not what i thought after all.
Avatar 9:41pm
Jesse K:

The restaurant is in Spain but not really of Spain as far as I can tell. I didn't include any of the foams they make, maybe next week for people who need a break from the election
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
coelacanth:

hmm, maybe i'll suggest an "edible foam party" to my favorite pub, to help folks relax on election night. (and ONLY for that purpose)
Avatar 9:47pm
