So, neither of today's featured cassettes are on discogs -- which, of course, means they don't exist.

Well, if they don't exist, then there shouldn't be any legal issues involved in archiving them, hmmm?

PITCH was a series of four publications - #3 is the only one on cassette.#1 & #2 have articles on microtonality (including one of mine on a proposal for a microtonal MIDI standard), #4 has charts for microtonal fingering and techniques.
Avatar 12:12pm

I believe I have at least one of the print issues ... somewhere.

Also, I used to have the J.C. & the Microtones LP -- which I need to get again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm

PITCH is also the name of the AFMM's CD label, distributed through CD Baby, mostly. The music is taken mostly from live recordings of AFMM concerts.

Poets and painters having one of those kinky pudding parties.
  12:51pm

The poet of that Pudding piece is Richard Arthur Warren Hughes who, according to wikischmedia, attended Charterhouse School, which is where the guys from Genesis were educated. It also says, "He wrote only four novels..." What could that possibly mean? "Only" four novels?!
Avatar 12:52pm

All four novels were about pudding, I presume.

Webhamster Henry:

@JtoTheK: Part of what motivates microtonality is to really understand why you are playing what you are playing. Once you start questioning the authority of the Western Scale, it may lead to other similar authority-questioning moments.
But if you are talking about instrument performance techniques, these charts are mostly for wind instruments, and not only about cross fingerings but also tricks like you will hear later today from Pete Rose, taping over holes (sometimes partially), overblowing and in Mr. Rose's case circular breathing (on a soprano recorder).
Avatar 12:57pm
annie:

this sound system i have on is making the noises come from all over.. it's cool
Avatar 12:59pm

Pete Rose is on the Pitch tape we will be hearing shortly. First, he'll take a few swings with the old bat -- then he'll play a bit of microtonal recorder.

Speaking of, I wonder what bats would make of these sounds.
  1:02pm
MrFab:

Pete Rose actually carved his bat into a recorder. Wait til you hear his microtonal National Anthem he plays before games.
  1:09pm
Dean:

Is the name of Pete Rose's tune on PITCH "Catch"?
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

No, but "Right-hand" is in the title ... so you're in the right ballpark.
  1:14pm
Dean:

I thought Rose was ambidextrous. I guess that means "both right hands."
Avatar 1:15pm

Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Glad you're enjoying the tape, JtotheK!

It's funny how little time it takes before microtonal tunings sound completely normal. I remember the first time I heard Harry Partch's music, way back when I was in college, it sounded totally bizarre and "wrong" to me. Now his tunings seem completely natural and normal.
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Oops -- this is Jeff Stayton, not Mark Rankin. Sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm

You're welcome - I'm a low-key microtonal evangelist.
This Mark Rankin recording was from a concert in the "Jazz Church" , St. Peter's under the Citicorp building.
Avatar 1:57pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape is sort of a miniature freeform show in a can -- lots of stylistic variety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Webhamster Henry:

A lot of the AFMM concerts were (are) like that - classical pieces done in original temperaments, non-western music, experimental explorations of instruments' capabilities, "modern" works that were performed once or never, realizations of notated thought experiments, and improv!

Dean, Schneider's the guy behind the "Partch" concert I mentioned earlier, performed on (replicas of?) Partch's instruments. highly recommended if they come to your town.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm

Seletsky performed in a lot of AFMM concerts... there was a really great improv duet between him and Joe Maneiri!
  2:44pm
Dean:

This morning Phil Gelb (shakuhachi, vegan chef & caterer) emailed his fans to lament the passing of Oliveros, with whom he'd made a handful of recordings. See "The Space Between" series, featuring Gelb, Oliveros, and a different bassist for each record.
