Hey Fred... Do you 'do' Christmas?

There are many sects and offshoots in Christianity. Most hold that the Jesus character did not get married, but you never know what can be found. It is not as if there is any evidence for what Jesus, or Iesus, or Yeshua bin Yosef did or did not do during his life, or even if he did live, so every now and then someone just makes up more stuff.

@Alex: true. Jesus history is murky to say the least.

@Jason: Not really. I will go to my brother's for lunch, but it's mostly about our traditional exchange (and tasting) of good whisky

We do have weird tenses almost nobody can get right. English is pretty logical: "have been" now, just add "will" to put that in the future. I'm not sure putting a label on it really helps

Timezone appropriate greetings, Jason & listeners. Pretty sure that Christmas Trees are another of those pagan traditions that Christianity ripped-off, so as long as they don't get adorned with Angels, us secularists and atheists can get away with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Jason_:

(although I also remember reading that angels are of dubious provenance, and maybe a medieval invention of some kind)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Alex In Illinois:

@melinda: but is it even "history", or just mythology?

@fred: Where? oh, I see you are French! Don't you have some kind of cake, and who ever gets the piece that has some object in it wears a crown?

And isn't there a delicious pork pie? Or is that just among Quebecois?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm

'The Christ Conspiracy' by Archarya S. : www.amazon.com...
Thank You, Alex. It always begins w/ the cultural premise that Christ lived in reality & there's some supposed evidence - of something ...somewhere ...we're all supposed to know about & accept. So - show me this irrefutable stuff for your gargantuan claims, already.
As a NeoPagan~ish sort, I should love Xmas to pieces - for nothing is more Pagan than Xmas. It's just too compulsory & over-the-top, though. When people are dying on Black Friday - you need to shut the thing off & start from scratch - as is true of so many of civilization's institutions @ this point...

@Alex: it might all be mythology. Also, I thought pork pie was just a Québécois thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm

...on the other hand - Xmas is like when all of Society agrees to Trip Out - & acknowledge that compassion & pleasure & even awe might possibly have some value in life - if even to ghettoize it into one season...

I do like a Christmas tree, but I recall, though I can't reach into the Googley innards to find just now, an old magazine cartoon showing a wide landscape, bare except for countless clean-cut stumps, being regarded by two Native Americans, and one saying, "White man, him say, 'What Christmas without a tree?'"

@ Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Xmas? If you're a pagan then Io Saturnalia! Yes, I get sick of it too, and I agree about Black Friday. But Wednesday I celebrated the Solstice. That is the real "reason for the season". And I admit, that I recently enjoyed a Steel Guitar rendition of the melody known for "Oh Holy Night".

@melinda: I think you are right about the tasty pork pie being Québécois.

@Jason_: Looks like I'm the one who should apologize: whisky seems to be a medieval invention, so angels were not required before then. It actually fits. As for dubious provenance, I like the legend that Irish monks invented whisky after learning to make perfume in the middle east

I think if a secular person of Christian heritage calls themselves Christian, devout Christians would disagree with that assessment. Would devout Jews not recognize secular Jews as Jews? I assume they would but I might be wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Alex In Illinois:

Next week, I will be celebrating Xmas AND Chanukah, even though I am an Atheist. So will my sister even though she is Buddhist. I am part of a blended family.

@Jason: It is a holiday of Pagan origin. It was the Saturnalia. The rebirth of the Sun. That is why it is so close to the Solstice.

No matter how little observant/non-observant a Jewish person is observant, s/he is still considered Jewish by Jews, even the Orthodox. On this matter, Hitler and many of Trump's followers agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I hung w/ well-known sort of high-level NeoPagans on the West Coast - celebrated Solstice w/ them...then - they all f*cked off to their families - & had freaking Christmas. Ha ha. I mean - most of what is observed & celebrated in Western Xmas Tradition derives from other than Christianity. A lot of it doesn't actually go back that far - Rudolph in the 40s, Santa Claus - himself a real amalgam - most of his imagery & character to the late 1800s - right? A lot derives from North European immigrants to the U.S. In this sense - it's rather an appealing organic aggregation that just happened...but the Christian thing of Jesus - then & Saint Nicholas (East European) gets insisted on. Even Xtian scholars who insist on the historic Jesus eschew his birth this time of year. He's imposed on Solstice as a Solar Hero, symbolically - which is - after all - Natural. It's complicated, too, then... But yeah - Jewish people get this attitude forced on them - while Xmas is presumed to be Universal - obviously true. The degree to which Xmas is German & North European isn't exactly a comfort zone for the Jewish either, necessarily...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Christ is Jewish anyway - it's all so atavistic, tribal, & stupid...
Avatar 4:01pm

Mayne the Irish monks'd be likin' a bit of the whisky humor. When Uncle Michael played something from The FIghting Jamesons last week, listener Glen says, "The fighting jamesons morphed into the non-violent bushmills."
And I says, "The Tullamore Dewds were chill with everybody."
  4:04pm
melinda:

@Jason: I think that might be the difference. There might be other countries where, in terms of Christian identity, heritage matters more than practice.
  4:07pm
melinda:

Rabbit, I love the concept of Jesus as a solar hero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: What I find amusing is that the English-speaking Christians never got around to renaming Easter to a Christian name. It still is named after a pagan goddess!! And her rabbit still remains! The eggs too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@melinda: Jungian stuff.
...I like the story of Xmas stopping trench warfare in WWI for a second. That's an amazing power. But that was two North European cultures w/ Germanic roots finding commonality...
@Alex: All of it - just add Christ. 'Easter' & 'estrogen' are related words, btw...
  4:10pm

I was kind of old when I discovered that Easter was a Christian holiday with religious significance for adults, not just a fun kiddie egg hunt.

My late husband was Jewish (though he never actually referred to himself in that way, he would identify as 'a Jew') and he celebrated Christmas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Alex In Illinois:

Regarding more or less observant Jews, next week, in South Beach, I will likely be approached by members of an Orthodox Jewish sect who intend to bring the less observant Jews back to the Orthodox faith. (I am not really Jewish, though I have been told "funny you don't look Goy")

As for my own beliefs, I think religion divides people, and we should stick to only scientific naturalistic explanations for things. I admit to indulging in "recreational religion" just like recreation drug use.

My wife considers herself a believing Catholic as do her Nun friends, but the religious beliefs they carry into politics do not have them voting for Trump. There really are pro-LGBT, pro-choice Nuns.

There is a lot of diversity within the Catholic community.

But then there is this Evangelical, Rapture-hailing, biblical literalistic, dominionist, Xtian-right.

@melinda: Yes, I think Pence helped secure a lot of those votes.
