1997 was the shit, i was 15. 2007 was the shit, too. 2017? NOT PSYCHED ABOUT IT
Avatar 9:21pm
northguineahills:

2007 was amazing minus the closing of Tonic in the Lower East Side, the last great venue in Manahattan IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
melinda:

Looking back over my years, it seems they are mostly a combination of good things/shit. I can't point to a really great one.
  9:24pm
Carmichael:

I would prefer not to talk about years, given my advanced age. I'd sound like Lyle ...

2008 sucked ass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Sam Segal:

Strong words, @Melinda! Say more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
melinda:

Are we just talking music or life in general? I stopped remembering what music happened when after about 1984. 2008 was a terrible year for me personally, but I don't remember what was happening musically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Sam Segal:

Oh, I meant generally, but more in a general pop culture/history sense.

all i can remember about 2008 is The Crash
  9:35pm
Carmichael:

I do remember my wife's great uncle talking about how he would go with his dad to watch the Civil War veterans parade in NYC. That freaked me out ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
melinda:

My health crashed in 2008, too, along with the economy. That's why I made the suck ass comment. I don't remember what was happening culturally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Sam Segal:

@Doug, what's your nomination for greatest year in human history?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Sam Segal:

@Quinn, 2008 was the year my high school basketball team was at its peak. Glory days!
Avatar 9:39pm
quinn:

boy howdy. are you the youngest DJ on wfmu?
  9:40pm
Carmichael:

I watched lots of people get laid off in 2008. All around me in government. I don't know how I survived it. It was an ugly time.
  9:40pm
Carmichael:

No shit, Quinn ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Sam Segal:

No, @quinn, I believe Ken was born in 2003!
  9:41pm
Carmichael:

Reborn, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

Gotta give it to 2000. The year the my daughter, the colossus Lincoln, began striding the earth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
My father used to tell me stories of seeing parades of Civil War vets in his hometown of North Plainfield, NJ. Of course, WWII vets like my 97-year-old pop are now way older than the Civil War vets were in my father's youth.
Avatar 9:50pm
northguineahills:

Huh, in 2008, I worked for the federal gov't. That contract ended in 2010. After that, it was a string of 6 month contract jobs interspersed w/ 6-9 month interviewing process. I start the crappy job tomorrow, still waiting on the better job opportunity, which I should find out w/in 2 weeks.
Avatar 9:51pm
quinn:

good luck, northguineahills!
Avatar 9:53pm
northguineahills:

thanks quinn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Sam Segal:

Keeping our internet-based fingers crossed for you, @ngh!
  9:55pm
Carmichael:

@ngh: you have a job! That is definitely a good thing.

@Doug: just the idea of watching civil war vets was an odd look backwards in time for me. My dad was in the 101st airborne in WW2, and had his own stories. I think I mentioned my military time, which included a stint in Guyana after Jim Jones. I guess we all have stories that shock others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
melinda:

I watched a video of film footage of civil war vets marching down the main street of my downtown. Not the same as a live viewing, but kind of weird nonetheless.
Avatar 10:01pm
northguineahills:

I forgot to mention that the Seekesinternational track reminded me of late 90s jungle/ragga. It's rare to hear that anymore.
Avatar 10:02pm
northguineahills:

oh, and thanks everyone!
  10:03pm
Carmichael:

Ya melinda. That was the 1860s and tore our country apart. It seems so odd to me to watch that video 150 years later.
  10:05pm
Carmichael:

As Daniel Blumin would say, "danceypants"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
melinda:

It's hard to imagine the country being involved in a civil war at all. There's always current talk about the nation being divided, blah blah, but it truly was then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
melinda:

danceypants, yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Sam Segal:

@ngh: that Seekers album is basically a collage of '90s ragga radio rips
  10:31pm
Carmichael:

Ok, firing up the grill. Fajitas night! Good mellow accompanying music.
  10:45pm
Carmichael:

Dude, that was deep ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks, man! Yeah, I know not everyone's ready to hear the TRUTH...but I'm here to break boxes and change the world.
  10:55pm
Carmichael:

Think outside the bun.
  11:10pm
Carmichael:

These guys are thinking outside the semi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Sam Segal:

They most certainly are. Great fusion of jazz and the open road.
  11:14pm
Carmichael:

Lennie. Nuff said.
Avatar 11:16pm
Scraps:

Yep.
Avatar 11:26pm
northguineahills:

Very poppy for Samara....
  11:27pm
Carmichael:

Just talking about jazz today, and the dearth of keyboardists. But the art form endures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Sam Segal:

I would argue its a great time for jazz keyboardists, @Carmichael! Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn, Matt Mitchell, Kris Davis, to name a few.
Avatar 11:58pm
northguineahills:

Thanks Sam!
