Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from January 20, 2017 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

What kind of gate we talking here? All that comes to mind in context that might have a threshold would be the gate on a transistor triode -- like there's a pot you adjust such that any voltage less than whatever means that triode sees nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Uncle Michael:

Jeff! rf! Robert!

Something like that...
  12:29pm
Listener Robert:

So for instance, an audio amplifier could have a setting such that less than a certain input keeps the output flat.

Noise gate on the mic processor...
Avatar 12:33pm
geezerette:

Ha! ain't it the truth!
  12:33pm
Listener Robert:

Meaning a squelch? Like below a certain threshold, 0 comes thru? Then yeah, that would function like (& probably be) a pot on the input to a linear transistor amp...unless this gate is already at the digital level.

Right, the mic picks up below a theshhold, an the circuit stays closed. The threshold was set too high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm

This song was actually recorded before digitally sampling was invented. So either they did a lot of tape splicing or the singers were actually singing the same phrase over again.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Lane Gray:

Listener Robert, some multieffects units have a noise gate built into them, but they're never as simple as what you describe, as those are pretty much instant. I've never heard a noise gate with less than about 200ms latency. And in some amps, you can't disable them. VERY annoying if you put them after a volume pedal. When I hit a string, I damn well expect a note to jump out of the speaker. Hopefully Michael's lacks the latency

@still b/p: In some on-line conversations on some forum, I got the idea that a 'bot was posting, but never got confirmed that it was human, and years ago, an entity contacted my on a dating site, and I was never sure whether it was human or 'bot, since "her" conversation was very dull.

At work, I once suggested that the behavior of a certain Database Administrator was more worthy of a 'bot than an organic entity.

Examples of humans flunking the Touring Test.
