Today's show will likely puzzle people who tune in late, so it'll be your job to explain what the hell is going on. I'll be airing two complete airchecks of radio shows from the early '80s, and I'm leaving it up to the hosts to announce the tracks. The shows are from France and Belgium, so the announcements are in French -- but it should still be pretty easy to figure out what the tracks they've played are.

Wait we dont get to see the cassettes themselves this time? sad!!!

Hey, Aaron in Minneapolis! They're just generic cassettes with handwritten scribble, so....

But those are the best kind!

Will do! How did you get your paws on these?
Avatar 12:07pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Aaron: They were given to me by the respective musicians/hosts. I actually have three different Marcœur shows. May play the others at some point in the future.

Cecile:

do you have a tracklisting you can put up here later or on FB?
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't have a written-out tracklist, no. I'm leaving it up to Albert and company to tell you. Want to be true to the 1980s radio experience when you usually wouldn't know what was playing until the end of the set
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Whenever a track isn't ID'ed, it's by Marcœur himself.
Avatar 12:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh, guess you were asking about posting a tracklist after the show -- most likely that won't happen, no. Sorry....
Avatar 12:28pm

damn.

You just have to follow along -- everything does get announced.

yeah, but I keep jumping up to do work stuff. I'll have to listen on archives.
Avatar 12:31pm
Carmichael:

Some French speaker will just have to list them. Any takers?
Avatar 12:31pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Wont be an archive of this show. We're really going back to the '80s.

Kay:

The Amazing Wrist Radio ad is really misleading. "Like the one used by the famous detective character," and the image of broadcast waves between the two cartoon characters pictured, they make it seem like a two-way radio. Ever feel like you've been sold a bill of goods?

Tony Coulter:

Hey hey, Kay!

yes!

lovely cut. Thanks Tony.
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

They do announce it shortly.
  12:41pm
Mark Williams:

some time back I was keeping a loose list of reggae/dub-inspired tunes/bands from the late '70s/early '80s. Most were British, of course. Shall add this one to the pile.
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

And here is Fred Frith (can't help myself)
  12:44pm
Mark Williams:

so for those old enough to remember these years, radio like this truly felt like some utter mystery. A gift, an opening, just... many things that are easier to recognize now looking back. Anticipation was perhaps the most prevalent and driving emotion and state of mind one felt. I think anticipation has gone way down in our era, which is perhaps the little lesson embedded in today's show.

Some regular listeners to this show should recognize this track. Dean? Vincent Priceless?

  12:55pm
Mark Williams:

Tony, what radio station was this hosted on, do you know? What circumstances led to them having a show, and was it a one-off or semi-regular thing?
Avatar 12:57pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: I do know the station, but would rather not say. I got this tape from Marcœur, so I know he would approve of this show, but I have not been in contact with the station. His show was more than a one-off -- I have two other episodes, and I believe there were others as well.

This is weird for me. I was working at Peaches (a chain music retailer) at 18-19 years old in 1982-83, and I bought imports and avant-garde stuff for the store (because nobody else wanted to). I was fascinated by these weird musicians, but at the time I mostly didn't know them.

This jerks me back in time more than you know, Tony! Staring at these LP covers by (say) the Virgin Prunes, wondering.

Yes, it's funny how a current-day show of tracks from the early '80s is not the same as a radio show from the early '80s playing then-new tracks.

Rich in Washington:

This is fantastic. Agreed, Tony, there's some slight missing vitality listening to 80s music on a current show vs hearing radio shows from the 80s, with them playing (then) new music.
Ive got quite a few airchecks of other people's shows from the early to mid 80s that I plan on ripping and uploading to Archive.org.
  2:04pm

well... I couldn't make out if she mentioned that track or not. You Tony? I was going to guess it was Subject.
