	10:18pm Fox (Rā-chul): People say "everyone can draw" but they don't say "everyone can sing". Some people are tone deaf. Some people are such bad artists that they don't understand what good is, and so they have no concept of how bad they are, and end up possessing a confidence that I deeply envy.

	10:21pm Fox (Rā-chul): I have been going on some spring shopping sprees at the local Good Will. I bought a brand new ConAir magnifying mirror that's supposed to light up, but didn't work. I unscrewed the switch to find that the wire was cut through without letting the copper run through like it's supposed to. Goddamn I love GoodWill.

	10:23pm Fox (Rā-chul): I had a serious fear of UFOs and grey aliens starting in late childhood through to adulthood. Like, serious terror. I read Whitley Striber's Communion when I was like, 12, and it fucked me up. I'd freak out. I thought I was abducted.
	10:26pm Fox (Rā-chul): Nah, you don't have to solder it, you can just twist the copper together and coat it in electrical tape. it's all going to be inside the switch anyway.

	10:31pm Fox (Rā-chul): Between 6th and 7th grades, I think, my Dad gave me some books to read. Some early Stephen King (Carrie, I think), Ubik by PKD, and How to Talk Dirty and Influence People by Lenny Bruce. That was a summer my brain exploded.
	10:37pm Scraps: Fox: I agree, even though it might be a good idea to say "everyone can draw", it's not true for strictly everybody. I can't draw, and I learned in college just how much I can't draw (to one of my teachers, who finally gave up on me, noting it wasn't lack of effort that bedeviled me). Now of course I can't use my right (good) hand, and my left is as good as my right hand used to be (i.e., bad).

	10:38pm geezerette: Fox, an artist I knew made a calendar every year of photos he'd shot of u.f.o.s he'd seen the previous year. I could never get him to admit it was a joke, never got him to laugh. It was LA, which is technically the southwest & he might have known old special effects people, but...?

	10:43pm Scraps: One of my friends thought Ubik was hilarious, just tracking the clothes Dick solemnly described the characters wearing. When I reread Ubik, I saw what she meant; that humor went right by me the first time.
	10:43pm melinda: Most people can draw and sing, it's a matter of how well. I was once going on about how I couldn't sing, and a friend who does sing well said that it's all practice and how interested you are in practicing. Which I don't completely agree with, some people do have natural talent and others have to work at it. But I appreciate that there is often more effort behind both drawing and singing (and instrument playing) than people realize. I can draw well, but I also draw terribly if I'm out of shape or don't have focus.

	10:46pm Fox (Rā-chul): Geezerette: I swear, that's the kind of shit that would give me a panic attack. Like, even though I know most of it is bunk, it's so instilled in me. If I saw something like a UFO in the sky, I'd turn into a maniac.
	10:46pm northguineahills: The problem w/ most vocals in out musical culture, is that they are based on pitch specific dynamics, and are utilized to convey a lingual story. However, if non-melodic vocals are needed, and a cloud of pitches based around certain 'pitches' are encouraged, then, anyone can perform vocals.

	10:47pm Scraps: When I close my eyes, I can't see what I was looking at a minute before. Literally. I have almost no visual memory. Fortunately, I have staggeringly good auditory memory, which is a good writer's tool.

	10:48pm Fox (Rā-chul): Scraps: You are making me want to go back and re-read it. I don't think I've read it since my youth. There's a lot of dated bits in his books, but I don't mind. (And holy crap, the adaptation of A Scanner Darkly was perfectly cast.)

	10:50pm geezerette: Melinda, totally agree about effort. Kind of need to do it every day to be confident & fluid. The best artists I know work all the time;although occaisionally there's someone like Chet Baker who was said never to have practiced. Not sure I believe that.

	10:53pm Scraps: A Scanner Darkly is my favorite Dick book. Dark, dark, dark. There was a time when Cronenberg has the film rights, which made me ecstatic. Of course it didn't happen
	10:53pm el Garree~: I have five streams of thought going on here... and then Daniel's sonic backdrop. B/P's point is well appreciated. I mean, like who appoints those dates anyway. Is that a job title or something? About drawing/singing... as mentioned it's all relative... I love both realistic Dutch and primitive. I have a bunch of kitsch and primitive work. My doxie was just barking at the Daniel's music. But really, a lot of people would hate this program as well. My doggie Samson and I like it though.

	10:54pm Fox (Rā-chul): Scraps: My right side has been slowly crapping out for the past 20 years. It's not something anyone would notice aside from some clumsiness, but my fine tuned motor skills are crap in both my hands, my right side worst and often in numb pain. I've been trying to train my left hand to draw. it's tedious and annoying. Painting is easier than drawing. Shapes of color are easier to wrangle than rendering lines, I've found. I can do pretty well if I've got reference, but I cannot draw anything out of my head. I'm pretty sure it's just how my mind works. My mother is the same way, to an insane degree. I asked my mother to draw me a chicken for reference when I was in grade school, and she drew it with four legs and ears like a cat.

	10:56pm Fox (Rā-chul): Melinda - it is definitely a combination of skill and effort, and it becomes offensive often when people assume that artistic accomplishment is like being born tall. There's a certain aptitude one is born with, sure, but there's hours, weeks, years, of practice involved.
	10:57pm Scraps: Thank you, geezerette! Sometimes I mourn about how easy some of it was, especially humor, whereas now it's hard. But I still have the sense of what is excellent and what it not.... anyway, thank you.
	10:58pm el Garree~: northguineahills- Yes, yes! That is so really spot on. Microtonal and atonal sounds are quite the norm. No auto-tune there. Ear and brain adjust... But The show must go on!

	11:26pm northguineahills: I grew up in FL, went to grad school in NYC, and stayed for 16 years. came down here for a job, but they down-sized a few months after getting here. My wife is still in NYC, but there are more employment opportunities here, and the income/cost-of-living-living ratio is much more favorable to NYC. Just applied to a Tampa job yesterday. Been spending my time b/tn J-ville, G-ville, and O-town the last few months.

I can't draw, and I learned in college just how much I can't draw (to one of my teachers, who finally gave up on me, noting it wasn't lack of effort that bedeviled me). Now of course I can't use my right (good) hand, and my left is as good as my right hand used to be (i.e., bad).

	10:43pm Scraps: One of my friends thought Ubik was hilarious, just tracking the clothes Dick solemnly described the characters wearing. When I reread Ubik, I saw what she meant; that humor went right by me the first time.
	10:43pm melinda: Most people can draw and sing, it's a matter of how well. I was once going on about how I couldn't sing, and a friend who does sing well said that it's all practice and how interested you are in practicing. Which I don't completely agree with, some people do have natural talent and others have to work at it. But I appreciate that there is often more effort behind both drawing and singing (and instrument playing) than people realize. I can draw well, but I also draw terribly if I'm out of shape or don't have focus.

Is that a job title or something? About drawing/singing... as mentioned it's all relative... I love both realistic Dutch and primitive. I have a bunch of kitsch and primitive work. My doxie was just barking at the Daniel's music. But really, a lot of people would hate this program as well. My doggie Samson and I like it though.

It's not something anyone would notice aside from some clumsiness, but my fine tuned motor skills are crap in both my hands, my right side worst and often in numb pain. I've been trying to train my left hand to draw. it's tedious and annoying. Painting is easier than drawing. Shapes of color are easier to wrangle than rendering lines, I've found. I can do pretty well if I've got reference, but I cannot draw anything out of my head. I'm pretty sure it's just how my mind works. My mother is the same way, to an insane degree. I asked my mother to draw me a chicken for reference when I was in grade school, and she drew it with four legs and ears like a cat.

	10:56pm Fox (Rā-chul): Melinda - it is definitely a combination of skill and effort, and it becomes offensive often when people assume that artistic accomplishment is like being born tall. There's a certain aptitude one is born with, sure, but there's hours, weeks, years, of practice involved.

My wife is still in NYC, but there are more employment opportunities here, and the income/cost-of-living-living ratio is much more favorable to NYC. Just applied to a Tampa job yesterday. Been spending my time b/tn J-ville, G-ville, and O-town the last few months.
