Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Cooh John:

I was at the station when I heard the news. I just had to listen to the show tonight. Subdued spazzing in spirit tonight. End of an era. John Lennon said:"If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'." The king is dead. Long live the king.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Folsom:

No Todd O Phonic Todd?
Avatar 9:17pm geezerette:

It's sad he's gone but OMG, the music he left us!!! We are so damn lucky he existed.
Avatar 9:18pm Melissa Jean:

I was eating a steak dinner (medium rare, incredible) and my bf blurted it out. Weird way to eat a steak.
  9:19pm Elle Tor's Husband:

Saw Chuck in '83/'84 and I can safely say that it was the worst live show I have ever paid money for. Lousy backing band and Chuck sat on a bar stool the whole show not giving 2 fucks. But you can't deny Chuck's grandeur as RnR Patient #1
Avatar 9:19pm geezerette:

He was the Cole Porter of Rock.
Avatar 9:20pm Linda Lee:

great hearing you all in the studio tonight!

  9:29pm Scott C.:

Hey, I was at that great Chuck Berry/Little Richard concert at Westbury Music Fair that Dave mentioned! The best part for me was when Chuck asked for requests from the audience. Amongst much campaign shouting from the assembled crowd (I mean, people were requesting Johnny B. Goode) I asked for Nadine, and Chuck turned around and played Nadine! Just like that. What a night.
Avatar 9:30pm Linda Lee:

fantastic!! sounds like an amazing night Scott C!
Avatar 9:30pm geezerette:

Genius.
  9:31pm GW:

read an early 80s interview with Chuck Berry with his reviews on punk/new wave bands of the day. of all the bands mentioned he liked the Ramones best. i hear the reason why right here!
  9:37pm Elle Tor's Husband:

Chuck Berry- single handed defeated the Soviet Union. Clear and irrefutable evidence to support this statement.

  9:55pm Adam from Vancouver:

I just now realized the influence that the song "Maybelline" must've had on Iggy and the Stooges for the song "1970."
  9:55pm exile-on-hicks-st:

Did you get five? counting "To Ramona" (Dylan)?
Avatar 9:55pm Linda Lee:

  9:57pm exile-on-hicks-st:

I was at one of those Chuck Berry shows, too. He did pull a bunch of women/girls on stage. He was terrible. But we were there out of a sense of duty - or maybe an obligation. Idk... we felt like we *should* go.

Chuck , Jerry Lee and Little Richard were instrumental ( NPI ) in my starting to play piano. When I head them , I thought ,hey I can do something like that .You just had to learn a left hand pattern and then beat the hell of top register w triplets . Of course it gets more complicated but you could sound like you knew what your were doing , to people that didn't know any better, fairly soon
  9:59pm Ted:

Yeah!

  10:03pm JakeGould:

When I heard Chuck Berry died, I was sad but also thought the description of him dying around lunchtime was cool. If I die, I think checking out on a weekend around lunchtime is basically not that bad a time/place to go.

Great show. R.I.P. Chuck Berry

Just a very slight tangent, a poor homeless man was killed this past Monday but some a-hole. But the victim had a pretty cool Twitter account and when I saw this one post he made two days before his own death about John Lennon and Chuck Berry, I really froze. Sad and beautiful world. twitter.com...

Avatar 10:30pm Daddy-o Dilly:

I saw Chuck Berry twice. The first time was surprisingly good and the second time wasn't bad. The first time was 1985 in Wichita at the local arena. Chuck nearly filled the place on Saturday night whereas the rest of this Friday-Sunday event was otherwise poorly attended. The local band that backed him up was the Wichita Linemen, a country band that was very popular in the area for about twenty years. Chuck was so happy with the band that he shook hands with all the guys in the band after EVERY song and repeatedly praised them. Roy Orbison played at this festival all three days, too. The other time I saw Chuck was at the Pageant in St. Louis on his 75th birthday in 2001. Little Richard was also on the bill. Since it was a special event in Chuck's hometown they both made a good effort which paid off musically. Chuck even signed autographs for a whole ten minutes. Way back in 1980 my wife and I found Berry Park in Wentzville, MO. There was a lot of driving South of I-70 in the Western suburbs of St. Louis. Lots of very expensive homes in heavily wooded areas. Finally, there was the front gate with a sign on it. We dared not enter even though the gate was open but by golly we found it. This was some years after it was open to the public.

@Linda Lee--far from an awful story. The man simply wanted to play as long as he could. The pick up band was a crack blues combo that delivered solid support.
Avatar 11:19pm geezerette:

Somewhere in last couple of days I saw an interview clip of Berry saying,"I wanted to sing like Nat Cole...", wish I could rember who it was he wanted to play like. One of them might have been Les Paul. Should have written it down.
