Show number nine, eight left to go, in this WFMU 2016/2017 Winter/Spring season that ends in early June. Today's show is (almost) all brand new, recently released hip-hop tracks from artists (emcees and producers and DJs) who prove instantly that hip-hop is very much alive and well in 2017. Just don't expect to find it on mainstream outlets. Either go digging/searching independently from the vast volume of hip-hop being made these days (some amazing/some horrible) or come to music loving outlets like WFMU where we will do the digging/curating for you Special shout out to Shareef Hakim for linking me to much of the music chosen for today. Personally I never fail to be amazed at how great so much new music is and also how the level of lyricism keeps getting better and better as the genre (once dismissed as a passing fad) continues to evolve - now into its fifth decade. Note that I only play music that I personally really like a lot - and I listen closely to songs several times before playing on radio - not only editing out curses but sometimes other lyrics or entire verses that I feel take away from an otherwise killer song. ---- Since I am stuck in Chicago O-Hare airport for over 24 hours (damn American Airlines and damn me for not sticking to non-stop direct flights) this show was pre-recorded with Bronwyn B handling board-op/engineering duties. However since the show is pre-recorded and the playlist done (and finished) in advance, I thought I would embed some videos since normally during accuplaylist mode if you do embed videos into body of the playlist -it causes issues every time the playlist automatically refreshes itself every few minutes. It should not do it this time - since already closed out - but if it does apologies in advance and (if I am able to get online during show airing today will disable the videos). Note that in the final few weeks of this series plan on doing an all live video version of this show with music videos being playing simultaneously with the audio versions + camera in on air studio capturing live MC and DJ etc. including DJ ALF doing live cutting and scratching on camera + more. Next week will be back in WFMU NJ studios for show #8 - when I might have Sammus join me (not sure of her schedule) and the following week (show 7) in studio or somewhere in NYC. In 3 weeks (April 28, show 6 will be doing show live from Brooklyn during the WFMU Record Fair. Thanks for listening and supporting both hip-hop and WFMU - Shout outs to Shut Up Weirdo's Michele and Frangry and to Downtown Soulville's Mr Fine Wine + to Bronwyn B
