Here comes Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm
Gary:

And Carol! Hey, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm
pacific standard simon:

WHUFF!
  7:03pm
Dean:

Avoid passive voice. "Joining me in studio is poet Carol..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm
pacific standard simon:

Pedant Deam
  7:04pm
Dean:

The worst sort, too. Half the time I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
Gary:

Hey PSF, Dean! But, what if I am a *passive*fist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
pacific standard simon:

Dean. You really want Gary to say, "Carol, a poet, is joining me in the studio"?
Avatar 7:09pm
northguineahills:

Shit, I used to go to Bang the Party when I was in Brooklyn. I think they even did a Ft Greene Park summer party if my memory still works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
melinda:

hi Gary and gang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Gary:

My fren who is named Carol upon my invite has made the conscious decision to appear live here, tonight, from 7-10 pm, and co-host this "show"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Gary:

NGH! Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Gary:

NGH, we DEMAND stories!
Avatar 7:12pm
hyde:

aw, i missed the grammar rodeo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Gary:

The grammar rodeo is 4ever, hyde!
Avatar 7:14pm
hyde:

then crank up the split infinitives
  7:16pm
Dean:

I'm agnostic, frankly. But Gary asked about the correct preposition, "by" or "with," which is a function of the passive construction. Problem solved if he announces, "Joining me in studio today is poet Carol Mirakove, who will spin and chat..." Don't get me wrong. I think an entire program delivered in passive voice would be fantastic. "Played by me first was DJ Oji & Una. Then Boyd Jarvis was aired." Capping the program at its close, "Good night, everybody. It's hoped that the rest of your week is one enjoyed by you!"
Avatar 7:17pm
hyde:

@Dean haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
Gary:

I super need this level of passive voice in my life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
pacific standard simon:

Radio voice is a magical thing which few people can produce without immersive training. I will be departing in about a half an hour to enjoy listening to a training session. Giants vs Braves. The Giants are training two of their former pitchers to be announcers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Gary:

Wait, what? You get to see this live, PSS?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Gary:

And sorry about calling you PSF before -- I was thinking about PasSiFity
Avatar 7:19pm
hyde:

@pss whoa, cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
pacific standard simon:

NoSeeUm. Listen'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
melinda:

I think you would want to say 'joined by'. 'Joined with' suggests attached twins.
  7:21pm
Dean:

So, @pss, the game is in Atlanta. Where is the announcer training?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Gary:

But what if we are "friend twins"?
Avatar 7:22pm
northguineahills:

The Fort Greene Park Summer party they curated was amazing. A mix of everyone that makes Brooklyn, Brooklyn, came out.
  7:23pm
Dean:

Yeah, "joined with" is a clause begging to end with an adhesive.
Avatar 7:37pm
northguineahills:

I only have a clear memory of the Ft Greene Park party, as it was early on a Sunday. The nights above Frank's blur into any of the other great House parties in NYC back then, just a lot of fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
pacific standard simon:

@Dean, the announcer is training, on the job, in Atlanta.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

Oops, game is in "weather delay. "It's a rainy night in Georgia... I believe it's rainin' all over the world..."

i went to the Loft a few years ago... i think even on the dancefloor you could talk over the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm

There was a club/bar in Iowa City in the 90s called New Sensations that I went to once. It was fun.
Avatar 8:08pm

i have zero club experience either, when it comes to dance music. but i did listen to this Grandmaster Flash record a lot in my dorm room in Amherst, MA

Ah, I don't know that Vince Aletti book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm

So this preceded the Tom Tom Club number?

and my favorite book is The Summer Book by Tove Jansson, but that is really not germane ;)

"Not Just Knee Deep" - I love this one so much!! Features a vocal scat section by Philippe Wynne, formerly of the Spinners, with the memorable line "Could this be me, immersed in funk so deep"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm

It could *definitely* be you! (btw)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm

Now i hear the De La Soul bit.
Avatar 8:38pm
hyde:

here's a fun fact i found out today--that i guess isn't all that fun, given that the principal in the anecdote just died of sickle cell anemia--but Prodigy of Mobb Deep was the son of one of the original members of The Crystals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Gary:

Oh, wow
Avatar 8:47pm
northguineahills:

Back in the mix tape days, I believe Knee Deep was the longest track I put on a tape until I put Tortoise's "Djed" and Philip Glass's "Music With Changing Parts" on the same tape.
Avatar 8:50pm
geezerette:

NGH, sounds like a great tape! Incredible mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
