I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners

listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, fred, Mayuko, and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
David D:

Wow an early Escher!
Avatar 12:02pm
Mayuko:

Good afternoon, james! fred, there are a bunch of French things that I have no idea what they are today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
David D:

And hello Mayuko, Fred, James, and everyone to come...
Avatar 12:04pm
Mayuko:

David D!! Welcome on board! I of course love his surreal stuff but actually love ones that are "normal" too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
fred:

"Let it begin / Oh joy" is a fitting opening for this show. Chances are these French things will be new to me. Though someone I do know sent a package of releases to the station last month
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
David D:

Yes, I am big on the geometries, but love this one too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
fred:

"Enregistrements Méconnus Pour Marionnettes, Théâtre Et Télévision" means "poorly known recordings for puppets, theater and TV". Scapin was a servant character in plays by Molière
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
David D:

Max Goldt is a very well-known German writer and satirist. I hardly recognized him together with the music.
Avatar 12:13pm
Mayuko:

@David D I love Max Goldt so much! And yet I have absolutely no clue what he is singing. There was a (very small) fan club of him organized by a record label Captain Trip who released his stuff in Japan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
David D:

This piece was about reminiscing about intimacy in the past. "Weißt du noch" kind of means "remember when".

Hey David!

Mayuko, curious if you are familiar with Sugai Ken's stuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
paul b:

I once saw Jad Fair (& 1/2 Japanese) open for Minor Threat sort of established my idea of what a rock 'n roll show ought to be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Doug Schulkind:

Good day, Mayuko and all playverts!
Avatar 12:27pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Doug
Avatar 12:28pm
Mayuko:

Thanks so much David! Should have asked you earlier but didn't have time to prepare my show until yesterday. I'm really sad that Max is not making music any more. I'm sure he must be a very good (and funny) writer, but...

Evan!! Great to have you here! I don't know Sugai Ken - should I check him out?
  12:29pm
Rickwaukee:

Is this what mansplaining sounds like to women?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Doug Schulkind:

Sir Flash!
Avatar 12:33pm
Flash Strap:

Maybe, yeah. I think he's pretty cool, but his brand of pastoral minimalism and microscopic sounds made me think of you in particular and I would be curious to get your insight

I LOVE this Midori Takada album!
Avatar 12:34pm
Mayuko:

Hello paul B! Never seen him live - saw his paper cutting art show though, loved it. Doug!! Good day to you too!
Hola Rickwaukee! Very possibly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
fred:

I would clicky-star that Midori Takada track, but I already did that in another show. I would love to see Kuniko Kato play this
Avatar 12:35pm
Mayuko:

Yeah! I know this Midori Takada album has got played here gazillions of times already on fmu, but it's great so still playin it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
David D:

Yes, Max Goldt is great as a writer as well and excellent presenter at readings. I'm actually less familiar with his music, but that has now changed, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
David D:

And a very good day to you, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
fred:

It's still as fresh as ever in my ears, I'm sure a few more gazillions plays wouldn't hurt
  12:38pm
rw:

Hello! Enjoying the show. Okay, now I've got to get back to work...
  12:41pm
rbrt:

this track feels like being inside a mechanical clock
Avatar 12:44pm
Mayuko:

rw! Thanks for stopping by to say hello!
rbrt, welcome on board! It really sounds like it, and this track doesn't sound old at all to me even compare to all other minimal music from recent years.
Avatar 12:45pm
Flash Strap:

This is such a cool album, I really like the cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Dave in Vermont:

most excellent set-been listening all along
Avatar 12:48pm
Mayuko:

@Flash That cover reminds me of why sand and waves can have similar pattern on surface = pattern that wind makes.
Avatar 12:48pm
Mayuko:

Thank you, Dave in Vermont! Welcome on board!
Avatar 12:52pm
Flash Strap:

totally. it reminds me of the cover or Roedelius' first solo album (Durch die Wuste, or Through the Desert) which depicts a figure diving into the sea. Another weird conflation of sand and water/desert and ocean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
fred:

All this talk of sand and desert, added to the heat over here: it's time for ice cream for me
Avatar 12:59pm
Mayuko:

@fred Very good idea. I saw an ice cream truck when I got off the train near the station. It said "Italian Ice" and had Donald Duck looking things on it. Def not Mister Softee.
Avatar 1:02pm
Flash Strap:

holy moly I love how long this track is, what an expanse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
tmoyo:

Hello! Amazing track! BTW, I just realized now there was a big dipper in the Escher print. Im getting old..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
fred:

At least it wasn't the evil Master Softee either. Maybe Jersey City is neutral in that conflict. Or is a new faction on the rise?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
paul b:

Now this track "Sand part 1" reminds of when I babysat for a family where the father repaired antique wall & hall clocks for a living, house was full of them all slightly out of sync with each other - then it struck midnight...

miscarriage also due to poor/no pre-natal healthcare - Support Planned Parenthood!
Avatar 1:30pm
glenn:

i mashed together the titles of two emails and thought that the name of today's show was "six delicious ways to grill chicken".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
fred:

@Rickwaukee: I'm not in any way disagreeing with your call for support of Planned Parenthood. But miscarriages are common despite the taboo about them. Looking for a direct obvious cause (and the implication that something or someone is to blame) too often fuels guilt in the women who had them. That's not helpful
Avatar 1:33pm
Mayuko:

Hola Ike! Yes Support Planned Parenthood is where it all comes down to, RIckwaukee!

glenn, now I think I should do a show with that title "six delicious ways to grill chicken".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
fred:

Hiiragi Fukuda reminds me of early Serge Gainsbourg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko and Vertigoers. How's the AC at the station today? Keeping things cool?
  1:37pm
Rickwaukee:

@fred for sure, blame is lame game - just recall reading that US has a ridiculously bad pre-natal and infant mortality rate for an industrialized nation - which comes down to healthcare
Avatar 1:39pm
Mayuko:

@fred Hiiragi Fukuda was hanging out with Naked Rallizes, I'd imagine him being pretty familiar with French stuff too.

Glad to have you here, tmoyo!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
fred:

@Rickwaukee: I can't say from here, but it looks like US healthcare is generally not that good, especially for its price. Our own new God-Emperor seems to love it though, so I might know more all too soon
Avatar 1:44pm
Flash Strap:

god-emperor... you must be in France?

U.S. health care quality varies a lot, and is often bad for poorer people and especially rural women. In some cases, esp. for those who can PAY, it can be some of the best health care in the world. My father needed a heart transplant a few years ago and it went very well for him thanks to Medicare and a good hospital in Baltimore (but it really helped that he was in good shape). We probably need Medicare for All, or similar, but it will never happen because there are lots and lots of profit-loving Republican doctors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
David D:

Two hours of excellence, Mayuko - thanks!
Avatar 1:53pm
Mayuko:

Ken, for some reason the AC is working much better than last year in Studio C. It must be because of you all pledgers! THANKS!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm

RIP Pierre Henry.
Eliane Radigue must be one of the last French pioneers still alive now. I hope she'll get more recognition before she dies
Avatar 1:54pm

great show Mayuko! Loved every second of it
Avatar 1:55pm
glenn:

i'm sure there were lots and lots of profit loving doctors in all the countries that now have universal health care. sometimes you just have to say fuck you to those types.
  1:57pm
Rickwaukee:

I don't know which I like more, playlist or DJ speaks. (it's DJ speaks) Can we have 3 hours of each?!
Avatar 1:57pm
Mayuko:

Yeah, it was amazing to read and learn about reproduction health related issues, to find ancient stupidity I thought was from faraway back in time was(is!) still around up until pretty recent, or even now. Very sad.
Avatar 1:57pm
Mayuko:

@fred what was that Great Nocturne all about btw?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm

I often bitch about work, but I heard about Pierre Henry's death through an email sent to everyone there. There are redeeming sides to it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
fred:

I listened again to La Grande Nocturne, now that its late I can hear it better. I don't like it. He starts each sentence with a number, but apart from that anything I could translate would be tainted by my not getting it, so I won't go there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
fred:

To clarify: I think it's either poetry or something artistic that doesn't fit that mold. So it takes more than understanding the words to translate without betraying
