I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Hey Jesse! Saw that you moved to a new studio on Daniel's playlist last night (after the show.) I just got one too! Would be great if we can do studio visits each other someday!

@Webhamster Henry: How come your volume knob is off and only goes to ten? I've always wondered

Great to have you here David! Thanks for tuning in, james, and Henry! Happy September to you too, rbrt!

Hi, Mayuko. I hope you had a pleasant week off. Happy to be here today.
Avatar 12:19pm
Mayuko:

Hola, Ken, thank you for tuning in! My week off was spent on carrying a bunch of boxes. Just moved to a new place. So happy to be back on the radio!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
fred:

I hope the new place is great. Moving is very tough for people who have a huge record collection (especially vinyl). I didn't even get asked when friends moved a few weeks ago, because I'm such a weakling (he runs a label)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Webhamster Henry:

@fred This is an old picture! I haven't visited it in a long time. Maybe visitors to the studio can take some new photos of it so I can see how it's doing.

Packing and moving boxes isn't anyone's idea of fun! We've all been there, we know what a drag it is...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

The acoustics are great in there! no flat reflecting surfaces (outside of the underground pond) means really smooth and long reverb! You can be really quiet in there.

Billie Holiday's voice is timeless

I went nearly 4 decades not even knowing that song existed. It wasn't taught to white-majority classes or discussed in college. Can only imagine how many areas of the country where that's still true.
  1:07pm
Rickwaukee:

That was some "Lament" - sounded like something you'd hear in a Terrence Malick film
Avatar 1:07pm
Mayuko:

haha, welcome Rickwaukee! If I ever open up a record store, I'll make a "dreams-core" section.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm

I think the writer of Strange Fruit was Jewish, so that segue from Avrum Berkovitsh to Skip James is appropriate in this set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm

Gary played strange fruit sung by a japanese artist a few weeks ago that is quite good

james, that's very interesting! At least the massacre of Koreans in 1923 was on my history textbook at school - though not much into the details. Only learned how really cruel and insane it was as an adult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm

And I am strongly moved by it's plumbing the depths of the diversity of human suffering - extremely moving.

listener james from westwood:

Major milestones in the black experience in America were covered in my public-school classes from '76 through '83 —slave trade, then the Civil War, then the Reconstruction, then blip forward to Dr. King—but never the lasting effects on both white and black Americans, other major figures in black culture, politics, or civil rights, or the enduring institutional racism in ways like redlining, effects on neighborhoods, differences in opportunity, etc. Kids left that school in 6th grade thinking all was well.

Driving, a moment to say hi, LOVED that last set, just sayin...

The original of Brundibár is in Czech. I saw an English version about 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
David D:

No, it is good to play it in a different language. By good I mean very hard to take actually - the contrast between the blithe sounding Italian children and the history of the piece, it really brings it home. Sorry if I've been typing gibberish here.

Moment of Daddy pride here, my younger daughter knew Strange Fruit when it came on.

Power erasing history is familiar to me. For a long time, decolonization was taboo over here, especially when it comes to Algeria. Talking about it was probably illegal at some point

Fred, thanks for clarification! Cosby's a tragedy and as for the other guy, it's the damage he's doing to the planet and our global future I'm horrified by. On a physical level he's just another human being with a tendency to corpulence. It's his mind that's repulsive.
