Hey Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm lucky i think that at a young age a Monk compilation my brother had (that i have now, unfortunately) was my introduction to "modern jazz". (after Benny Goodman, Billy Holiday, etc)
i stepped right in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

That's a solid place to start.
Avatar 10:30pm
geezerette:

Funky Monk !
Hallo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

My intro was my Pop's copy of the Modern Jazz Giants LP, where you can hear Miles yelling at Monk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

I hope I had the same effect on my younger brothers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth∅:

oh man i do and maybe don't want to hear Miles yelling at Monk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

It's very brief

The Signe Tole Andersen of Fairport
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Isn't this Mama Cass special?
  11:10pm
Dean:

Cass Elliot appeared as a character (portrayed by herself) in the Scooby Doo cartoon series, which my kids watch on DVD and YouTube. They have no idea who she was, but even as a cartoon character she impresses them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Funky16Corners:

We got to see a HBR cartoon art exhibit at the Norman Rockwell museum and they had a cel of Mama Cass and the Scooby Doo gang
Avatar 11:17pm
geezerette:

Mama Cass was brilliant. I love her reaction shot watching Janis Joplin in Monterey Pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

One of my favorites. Such a great voice and personality.
  11:30pm
Dean:

Coincidentally, I'm just now scanning a series of posts by Al Martino's daughter about '60s-'80s LA. She displays a photo of a 1966 issue of KRLA's Beat magazine from April 1966. Among the upcoming concerts there announced, "Mama's and Papa's" at Hullabaloo. Hullabaloo was a club that shortly became the Aquarius Theater, where "Hair" premiered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

That place has a very interesting history. I think it may have started as the Jerry Lewis Theater where he did his early 60s TV show
Avatar 11:39pm
geezerette:

Think in the 30's it was Earl Carrol's , a cabaret club. Above the entrance were,(supposedly), the words,"Through These Portals Pass The Most Beautiful Girls In The World". Oh, Hollywood.
  11:40pm
Dean:

According to Martino, it started as the Earl Carroll Theater in 1938, then Moulin Rouge from '53-'66, then Hullabaloo, and in early '68 Kaleidoscope. Canned Heat was the house band, the proprietor being their manager (and brother of comedian Phil Hartmann), until it was renovated later that year to host "Hair."
  11:41pm
Dean:

Shoot, check it out: http://martinostimemachine.blogspot.com/ Great pix of Eddie Cochran and Brian Wilson shopping at Wallich's Music City. (I've been there!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Sorry, cued up the wrong song there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Funky16Corners:

I was wrong. Jerry Lewis was in the El Capitan Theater
Avatar 11:49pm
geezerette:

This set reminds me of kerosene lamps and Celestial Seasonings.
I studied hippies in their native habitat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm a little young but always aspired to a kind of hippie-hood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Funky16Corners:

A little young to be an actual hippie. Not actually young...
Avatar 11:52pm
geezerette:

Me too!!!
Avatar 11:53pm
geezerette:

Great version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah Richie was great. I have a couple of other covers I should play in the future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth∅:

i was a child hippie, or at least so i thought! the teenagers (and 20somethings?) generally thought more favorably of me than my chronological peers. where i lived i was the one and only boy with long hair within 2 grades in elementary school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth∅:

i like Richie's version of here comes the sun, especially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Funky16Corners:

I begged to have long hair, to no avail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
Funky16Corners:

Richie had one of the GREAT voices
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
coelacanth∅:

my brother and i worked on my parents starting when i was in first grade. we had crew cuts until then. each school year we managed to get it longer and longer until it was past my shoulders in 6th grade.
Avatar 12:01am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am
coelacanth∅:

you could've gotten away with it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am
coelacanth∅:

i had to weigh out the attention of older girls to being picked on by boys and by adults!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am
Funky16Corners:

I cultivated that biker look for years, but I don't think I was capable of anything else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am
coelacanth∅:

i don't think i ever looked like a biker...even though i rode!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am
coelacanth∅:

take care Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am
Funky16Corners:

Oddly enough I looked like a stray Hell's Angel but never owned a bike (though I wanted one in the worst way). I couldn't have pulled it off. I encountered the real thing a few times. I wouldn't have made it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Dog-Day Cicada:

Thanks for the mention, Larry. You are very welcome.
