It's apropos. Yesterday I migrated all three studio computers to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update...mainly because the one that a) wouldn't let me defer it any longer, and b) melted down in the process, got sussed.

Just retweeted a heavy but needed thread about the acceptance of Dr. King by whites of later decades as long as he is the “safe King, the inoffensive King.” It quoted a stat that he had, at the time of his death, a 32% approval rating.

I am not optimistic that human tribalism can be "fixed." Evolutionarily speaking, it was a feature, not a bug. Societally, it's proving a bitch to move past.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
Jeff Golick:

I hear you, @UM. I think a lot of the difficulty in choosing empathy/commonality over antipathy/your-side-sucks-ism is a feeling of limited resources, a sense that one barely has enough, is at risk of "losing" -- this is pretty much the main vibe of late capitalism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am
fred:

@james: good thread indeed. There was a militant side to Dr King that is often conveniently forgotten, especially about poverty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am

It was striking to see the color photo. So much of that era, even as late as '68, is made up of black-and-white news photos and coverage.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am

@Jeff: "a feeling of limited resources, a sense that one barely has enough, is at risk of losing" isn't a bug or a feature, it's the OS of capitalism (for the low 99%, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am

@fred: yes, King's Poor People's Movement was a much harder sell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am

I fear that our little lizard brains are wired to define commonality in the most facile and (increasingly) most toxic way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am
Uncle Michael:

But, we also evolved the capacity to reason, and it's our only means of becoming more...reasonable...than our terrified, tribal selves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am
Uncle Michael:

And make no mistake, in my book, the more tribal your behavior, the more cowardly I believe you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am
Uncle Michael:

I'm constantly asking myself of gun-toting, racist, "patriots," what are they so fucking scared of?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am

That fear is palpable, and real, @UM. I don't rightly know, but think at base the answer is in the vicinity of "existential dread."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am

Whilst we have devisive leaders people will never be able to talk in a rational and friendly manner. The best way to resolve differences is by starting to talk to each other. We will find we have more in common than we realised.

I saw a dance show based on A Love Supreme this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am
Jeff Golick:

How was that, @fred?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
fred:

Pretty good: each of the four dancers was related to an instrument, but that was only blatant for solo parts. It was not having a dancer mimicking the part; for instance, when the sax part was most melodic, all dancers tended to do the same thing. It was more about the musical structure than individual parts

Uniting those within Texas who are finally disgusted with the extremes of the right would be a good task for the Dems right now.
