Xinjiang is the Chinese name for what has at other times been called Eastern Turkestan. It is/was officially the Uyghur Autonomous Region, and was until recently majority Uyghur, but China has done a whole Russification thing and moved many Han Chinese to the area in the last two decades, and there is now major repression of the Uyghur.

@coel@12:53 & @fred@12:30, I'm not sure about that: BT and Jesse J. play super-weird stuff sometimes, Joel St. G ends his show w/freaky electronic noise or dark ambient usually (not last week though), Samantha gets odd now and then, Marcel is far-out sometimes too (hoping to see him promoted to a better slot soon), and don't forget John Allen. @fred@12:52, ha ha! Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm

In too many areas of this country, if you say "I'm listening to music from Baghdad," you'll get the stink eye b/c of lingering bigotry borne, ironically, from our starting 2 wars in Iraq. Shows like this push back on that sort of narrow-minded view.

Ike, out of around 70 show/week, considering shows that just sometimes veer toward things more out there doesn't come close to what fmu was 10 years ago...but the main thing is not those great, adventurous djs that are gone, but the almost mainstream ones that have replaced them.

So much of German tradition got co-opted for Nazi purposes, that things like German Kosmische music and electronic Kraftwerk type stuff as a way to create a completely new postwar German musical culture is fascinating. (I may have cribbed this from a comment or three in a BBC special on the former genre.)
Agreed on the deep humanity in the core of Kraftwerk.
