I briefly lived with an engineering student in college. During the window when I was 21 and he wasn't, we had an arrangement: I would buy him alcohol in exchange for handmade electronic musical gear. The best of the lot was an old-fashioned telephone converted into a microphone (complete with distortion). I think I paid a bottle of Goldschlager for it.

Good band, Augustines. Several years ago, they came in to play live for Soundcheck on WNYC when it was a radio show. They were fairly loud when I was setting their mix up. Just before the show went live at 2pm, I happened to glance up at our studio POV cam. It was shaking a bit and I thought, "Wow, they're playing louder than I thought." I then realized we were in the middle of an earthquake!

Well this isn't something one usually hears on WFMU! Too bad...anyway, I ran into Steven Tyler early one morning on 8th Street in NYC, no one else around. I said "First concert I ever saw was you guys at Madison Square Garden in 1976." And without missing a beat, he goes, "And we blew your motherfuckin' mind, right?" All always love him for that.
