When an Erotic Photographer’s Muse Becomes His Critic
By Motoko Rich

"Last month a model who posed for Nobuyoshi Araki, Japan’s most notorious photographer, accused him of exploiting and bullying her for 16 years.

... In a blog post published in Japanese in early April after “The Incomplete Araki” opened at the Museum of Sex in Manhattan, the model, Kaori — who uses only her first name — said that over their working relationship, Mr. Araki never signed her to a professional contract; ignored her requests for privacy during photo shoots; neglected to inform her when pictures of her were published or displayed; and often did not pay her.

'He treated me like an object,' she wrote."

"This is a translation of a Japanese blog post published on April 1 by KaoRi, renowned photographer Nobuyoshi Araki’s longtime model.
...

I wanted to share this powerful firsthand account of mistreatment in the art world because it has been an overlooked subject for far too long, especially when it comes to female models often referred to as “muses.” Profiting off of vulnerable bodies and not compensating models for their time, energy and talent needs to stop."

Excellent theme, @ Mayuko. I just read an appreciation of his show at the Museum of Sex that only gingerly alluded to the abuse claims.

It's not about me personally like his style or not, mzmzzm. It's about basic stuff in human relationship, which is respect for others. I understand some people enjoy his artistic execution, and of course they're entitled to do so.

The following is not in any attempt at consolation, but I am kind of glad that this old school boys club is getting its head handed to it. Working in an industry that for far too long was all about the "casting couch", I am glad to see the rug pulled from under the creepy scumbags that rose to the top.

From a cultural standpoint I hope that the same empowerment will carry forward to places that some might not feel as emboldened due to centuries of "cultural norms".

Believe it or not, I served as a "muse" to an amateur choreographer for a couple of years before realizing she was emotionally manipulating me. This show's title is a pretty close translation of what I told her when I figured it out and burned bridges with her. So I know how part of this works

@mzmzzm Nobody is censoring anything. In fact there have been no problem for him to publish his work. He hasn't done anything illegal and he's not getting punished. Nobody is seeking to punish him. All KaoRi is saying is that she wants to be treated like a human, not an object. "Please strive for a complementary relationship of supporting each other" is what she writes.

mzmzzm, did you even read her post? he didn't pay her when he should have, published her photos without her permission, making money and fame off of her photos, bullying her at work. None of them are "illegal', but the question is do you respect that? Do you value that? This is about a relationship in a work environment. Nobody's talking about his "art".
  12:41pm
JakeGould:

Thanks to the Internet, I’m learning more and more of the backstories of artists and there’s always some crap… Except for Matisse, Miro and Doisneau. Those are artists I have read up about recently and impressed how their careers only really started when they were older. Well, maybe not Miro.

  12:48pm

Well, depends on the artist! I mention Matisse, Miro and Doisneau because those are artists whose backgrounds I recently got into. Miro was most recent and interesting since he’s Spanish and has an odd Jewish background that goes back to the Spanish Inquisition in the 1300s.

I've always wondered if this feeling comes from the aversion of being objectified / being expected to behave submissively.

@Ike: If you go, I would recommend focusing on the areas between 9th Street and 3rd Street. And then maybe from Union Street down to where the big Key Food with a parking lot is. Definitely some good stuff

@mzm And re: her management, I do think young people should take more active move and be their own bosses right from the start - rather than trying to be "found" by established artists (that are often old men, in Japan.) Which is what Kaori is saying too. However, nothing excuses people in the power exploiting, taking advantage of inexperienced people. That is just not cool and I condemn that.

Too hot for a long dog walk. The bright yellow of the oil seed rape fields are stunning in the sunshine.

I've been thinking about the world my kids and their generation are entering and creating. Not that I have any clear ideas of what it will be like but I do have hope and faith! Discussions like this one are incredibly important.

Thanks again Mayuko!

I think I've proven myself guilty of mansplaining a few times in this show, which was doubly bad
I'll be away next week, not out of shame, but trying to get prime tickets for next year's dance season

@fred I don't think I saw such thing? Your thoughts and comments are clearly always welcomed! Good luck re: tix!
