“In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) added PTSD to the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) nosologic classification scheme (2). Although controversial when first introduced, the PTSD diagnosis has filled an important gap in psychiatric theory and practice. From an historical perspective, the significant change ushered in by the PTSD concept was the stipulation that the etiological agent was outside the individual (i.e., a traumatic event) rather than an inherent individual weakness (i.e., a traumatic neurosis). The key to understanding the scientific basis and clinical expression of PTSD is the concept of "trauma."”

Also, 1980 or so—right after PTSD was formally recognized—Reagan cut mental health funding. So it’s such bullshit… In the 1980s you really still had tons of Vietnam war veterans all over. And then Reagan does that?

Also, if you think about it, the whole “wild west” that has be so romanticized in the world is based on ex Civil War soldiers just being kicked out into the world on their own. So you have all of these crazed ex-soldiers basically becoming mercenaries in the wild west of the 1800s.

The Sergio Leone westerns really did a decent job of connecting the Civil War to the cowboy B.S. happening at the time.

vg Donovan song. I'm reminded of pete seeger's "waist deep in the big muddy". Wiki says: The song tells the story of a platoon wading in a river in Louisiana on a practice patrol in 1942. Imperiously ignoring his sergeant's concerns, the captain orders the platoon to continue with himself in the lead until they are finally up to their necks. Suddenly, the captain drowns and the sergeant instantly orders the unit to turn back to the original shore. It turns out the captain was not aware that the river was deeper with a joining stream upriver. The narrator declines to state an obvious moral but intimates from what he has read in the paper that his nation itself is being led into similar peril by authoritarian fools. Each verse ends with a line noting that "the big fool said to push on" except for the final verse, which changes to the present tense, and the fourth verse which says "the captain dead and gone." The story is similar to the Ribbon Creek incident, which occurred in 1956.

i just feel for the vets and what they went -and maybe are still going through; regardless of whether i agree with their reasoning or not. ...and i've known some vets that quite regretted joining the military, though they generally wont say that straight out.
- of course it's not them responsible for creating the situation; but it is true that if everyone refused to participate the warmongers wouldn't be able to proceed in their shenanigans.

I have a relative who what a door gunner on a Huey in 'Nam when he was eighteen years old. He told me when he was in country he was doing three missions a day and scared shitless the whole time. Let's just say he is a little shaky to this day. But when I think of what I was doing when I was eighteen, I thank my lucky stars that mess was deescalating when I had to sign up for the draft. Still, The constant images of the war made me so curios about Viet Nam, as soon as I could, I got my ass over there. I'm still haunted by what I saw.

I haven't caught up with everything on the comment board yet, but I really appreciate you all sharing these stories. I am still learning about the wars and veterans/survivors in the US. Will read all the comments again carefully on my way home!

Zats, I dozed off near the end. Thanks, Mayuko. Beautiful show tonight. Have a good week. My dad was in the army in the 50s and his unit almost got sent to Korea. I'm glad they didn't go.
