I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Death in Midsummer, a short story by Yukio Mishima www.sfponline.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am
listener james from westwood:

I attended a funeral yesterday, which maybe is why this line jumped out: "Such incidents of course go far beyond the dictates of custom, and yet at no time are people more bound to follow custom."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners
  12:02pm
P-90:

A reading assignment? Oh no, I'm behind in today's lesson already...!
Avatar 12:03pm
Mayuko:

@james You already skimmed all the way through to the funeral scene?! Proofreader's speed, I suppose!
  12:03pm
ike:

Dig it.
Avatar 12:05pm
Mayuko:

Hello my radio family fred! P-90, you can skip it it's basically just some people died, as usual for the JP literature from that time period, haha.
Avatar 12:05pm
Mayuko:

Hallo Ike!
  12:07pm
Alessandro from Italy:

Finally today I will decide the music for my funeral
Avatar 12:08pm
Dave B:

I recently added Oshoshiki to my Plex library.

And then in a weird twist of fate, my friend Tomomi sent me a letter from Japan telling me her father passed away, and that she won't be able to send birthday or new years cards for a year of mourning.

What's proper protocol? Should I send a note of condolences?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Dropof Goldensun:

Greetings Mayuko and listeners!
Avatar 12:09pm

sorry Ososhiki.... typing with fat thumbs

Welcome to Play Vertigo, Alessandro! My playlists are good funeral-music catalogue!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
melinda:

hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Dropof Goldensun:

I'm hearing a little Bach mixed in there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
fred:

I read a Mishima book back in college, but had trouble finishing it. I don't even remember which one it was
Avatar 12:14pm
Mayuko:

@Dave B Been wondering if you could add some Tora-san there in addition to Ososhiki. THAT is the real gem of Japanese art!!!
I'm not the best person to ask about social protocols but I think a note of condolences is what you're supposed to do... Mochu-mimai or something it's called...
Avatar 12:15pm
Mayuko:

As Mishima writes, "A death is always a problem in administration" indeed!
Avatar 12:15pm
Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Dropof and melinda! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar 12:15pm
fleep:

The title of the story kind of tips it, so I saved a bunch of time by just reading the title.
Avatar 12:17pm
Mayuko:

@fred He can be pretty ridiculous, probably that's why you didn't finish.
  12:18pm
P-90:

Not skipping a Mishima. Reading now, while listening, music and words make sense together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko—Heh, the timestamp was when I finished! I just copied that line in case I spotted more than one to comment about here. Fiction I usually force myself to go slowly b/c I proofread and edit so little of it!
Avatar 12:19pm
Mayuko:

Hi fleep! He's good at titling his stories... I've forgotten most of what he wrote but I remember the titles, haha.
Avatar 12:21pm
Mayuko:

@P-90 I'm glad! That was how I was listening to this record over and over this past week because it reminded me of this short story.
  12:23pm
Dave B.:

Thanks Mayuko! I will do that. I’ll be adding more to plex soon. Just got a bunch of Hotchcock

Good afternoon, Mayuko and the Vertigo Village. My ice cream didn't fare well in the Garbecue heat. If I served it at 9AM, it wouldn't have been all melted. I guess I need to bring more ice or a freezer along next time.
Avatar 12:26pm

Melted ice cream and a straw is its own separate pleasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm

@fred - I had a very nice time. I thought it was great. It was hot and uncomfortable by early afternoon, but a few clouds rolled in around 3PM and improved things. Lots of good food and meeting FMU personalities.

Hi david, thanks for tuning in! The way mockingbirds sing sounds often a little too proud, maybe that's what's appropriate for Mishima-inspired show, haha!

Just in the middle of reading Perfidia by James Ellroy. Based on the days after Pearl Harbour and the effect on Japanese folks in Los Angeles. Powerful writing.

Back in the 90s there was a mockingbird on the roofs here that would sing the car alarm song. I kid you not... at the end of the song, hed do the chirp of someone shutting it off and a back flip

Ah Pataphysique. The answer to imagined questions. Thank you Alfred Jarry.

I just finished the story, though I was tempted to bail out before the end. I liked it at first though. Not my kind of writer, I guess

We have some Peacocks near us. They do make a racket when trying locate each other. Nothing subtle.

I saw Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor last month. Good show, but not as good as earlier ones. I don't like how the voice's intonation matches the words on this track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm

Hi, BiUK. I can barely read you over the buzzing on your computer...maybe @fred has an idea?

Crows can be really loud, especially a few feet from my bed. But I loved seeing them play on the playground slide downstairs. Sadly, the slide was removed a few months ago

Mayuko:

@fred Crows on a slide?! That's so cute! They're smart.
Avatar 1:42pm
♪ke:

@Fred@12:31, I thought the Garbecue was a blast this year partly because a random super-enthusiastic WFMU fan who had never been there before showed up and raved energetically to Rob W. about how good his show is. He looked totally startled (Transpacific Sound Paradise doesn't get much love sometimes). She and some other people got me talking so that's a little unusual.
  1:47pm
Rickwaukee:

I have no idea about what's popular or selling well so am wondering are movie soundtrack albums even a thing anymore, besides Disney kid stuff? Or is that something left back in the 70s 80s?
Avatar 1:48pm
Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee As long as Morricone Island continues on WFMU, movie soundtrack IS a thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
fred:

@Mayuko: Yeah, they'd fly to the top, slide down and take flight just before reaching the bottom. There didn't seen to be any point in this, that's why I call it playing. Maybe they saw kids doing it and thought they'd try it
  1:51pm
Rickwaukee:

They used to be huge revenue for the movie/label conglomerates - did a La La Land soundtrack make a blip?
