Recent tech news:

Facebook Is Still Abusing Your Privacy (The New Republic, July 11): "Despite promises from Mark Zuckerberg, the company's embrace of facial recognition technology suggests that it has no intentions of changing."

Christopher Wylie, Cambridge Analytica whistleblower: "Just to sum up. 1) Facebook broke the law. 2) Cambridge Analytica broke the law. 3) Vote Leave broke the law. 4) LeaveEU broke the law. 5) Brexit and Trump were both won through breaking the law. 6) Facebook let it all happen and covered it up."

Here's what Sergey Brin is wearing lately.

What Elon Musk Should Learn From the Thailand Cave Rescue (Zeynep Tufekci in the NYT, July 14), a response to solutionism: "The Silicon Valley model for doing things is a mix of can-do optimism, a faith that expertise in one domain can be transferred seamlessly to another and a preference for rapid, flashy, high-profile action. But what got the kids and their coach out of the cave was a different model: a slower, more methodical, more narrowly specialized approach to problems, one that has turned many risky enterprises into safe endeavors — commercial airline travel, for example, or rock climbing, both of which have extensive protocols and safety procedures that have taken years to develop."

Meantime, here's how to use tech in self-defense...

So when are we going to start discussing what happens when our current regime decides to nationalize the key players in our Tech industry (Goog, FB, etc.)?

I'm envisioning it being rolled out both to "protect" us from the excesses of big tech that have been discussed here, and also framed as a means to protect "National Security".

What was that James?

Greetings, Mark and the techtonique! So great there's a TV commercial airing these days about the joy and convenience about accessing one's phone via facial recognition.

@melinda they were saying that the elon sub was too big and wouldn't work in the caves and elon doubled down on how important the sub was

@melinda then elon called the guy saying the sub was worthless a pedo since he was in thailand he was obviously looking for underage sex

Biggest and fastest way Musk could've helped: fund the damn rescue. Would've been a rounding error. Not everything has to be some branding exercise.

musk hasn't created any new value or product - all he has done is fill his pockets with investor and government grant money.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm

@dale, too true. I grew up in a conservative area, so to see how many of my high school acquaintances have calcified into cranky caricatures has been useful, albeit depressing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
ultradamno:

Is it ironic Facebook's apology ad for (among other things) "data misuse" is wall to wall footage apparently appropriated from Facebook users?

Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Webhamster Henry:

I pay for my email, and have a domain with a catch-all, so I have an unlimited number of email addresses.
I give each service their own version of "my email" or login, instead of a single address that can correlate to big data, and were any of those emails compromised, I would know exactly where the problem is.
Many of my FB friends (and myself) are not there under their usual names, which is great.
