One of the most surreal moviegoing experiences I've ever had was 2001 at the Harvard Astronomical Society. Everyone there except for me and my friends appeared to be actual scientists and their families. During HAL's "death" scene, they were all in HYSTERICS. I started to get the unnerving impression that they knew something I didn't.
