@chresti - nice one! - my first was kinda similar - as an American soul record when I was a very young well behaved Irish Catholic white kid in the suburbs of Dublin Ireland - Temptations' "Cloud Nine" which, upon listening to lyrics of again lately is kinda hilarious IMO. Am gonna play it later in show as the only non new 2018 track

First physical record I bought was Smashing Pumpkins "Cherub Rock" (17). (I believe I boughtBowie's Space Oddity the same weekend). (I had a bunch of Beatles records from my father when I was 16). First cd I bought was MJ's "Bad" w/ Weird Al's "Fat" age 11. First cassette, Genesis' "Invisible Touch" at age 10. I seriously didn't pay attention to music until I was 16. After 18. it was a tsunami that hemorrhaged all my income.

@mb I like those firsts of yours inc. The Who hits album - and like how Bronwyn B didn't just buy one but many records upon her first music shopping spree + @NGH nice ones

Yo Bill, how are you? One of the first tapes I bought was Adam & The Ants
Avatar 7:13pm
Billy Jam:

Adam and the Ants with two drummers right?
Avatar 7:14pm
Billy Jam:

@Cheri Pi - that Doug E Fresh tape is a nice first music buy - remember seeing bootlegs of it (and other early era hip-hop) at flea markets back in the day
  7:16pm
JakeGould:

First 45s I bought were from a neighborhood yard sale:

KC & the Sunshine Band’s “Shake Your Booty” and Paper Lace’s “The Night Chicago Died”. I think that cost me 50 cents?

First LP was the soundtrack to “The Empire Strikes Back.”

Unsure about what my first CD was.

First MP3s I bought from the iTunes store? Three Barry White LPs, “Can’t Get Enough,” “I’ve Got So Much to Give” and “Stone Gon’”

the first 78 i bought was paul robeson swing low sweet chariot

@Jake Gould - those are good ones - I was broke as hell as a kid so used to buy the KTel 22 Dynamic Hits compilations that preceded the "Now Thats What I Call Music" CD collections of hits
  7:21pm
Tall Paul:

The first HipHop album I bought was Kick IT The Def Jam Sampler album volume 1 in 85. It was the first time I heard Public Enemy. The first HipHop soundtrack I bought was Breakin
Avatar 7:22pm
Billy Jam:

@Tall Paul - I don't know that one - have a bunch of 80's hip-hop comps but not that one
Avatar 7:23pm
Billy Jam:

every year on WFMU during the annual "Singles Going Steady" week FMU DJs tend to dig up a lot of early life music purchases
  7:24pm
JakeGould:

@BillyJam: Yeah, I mean I was a kid and I think it was like 25 cents for both from that yard sale. When I was a teen and started to buy real LPs it was always cut out bins or used bins. Mainly at Titus Oaks records on Avenue U in Brooklyn.

Speaking of which, this convo reminded me of the first cassette I ever bought: Steve Martin’s “Wild and Crazy Guy” from Alexanders that used to be near Bloomingdales on the Upper East Side. Positive my parents went there bargain shopping because they were going out of business because there’s no other reason for us to visit that specific location back in the day.

Billy Jam:

@Bronwyn B - love the name of that record store in Ithaca Angry Mom Records - was it a cool spot and who owned it? (past tense assuming it is gone now)
Avatar 7:27pm
Billy Jam:

@Jake Gould - never heard of that record store Alexander's - what was it like?
  7:29pm
JakeGould:

@BillyJam: Alexander’s was a discount department store. There was Macy’s, May’s, Korvette’s and Alexander’s. My parents loved department store hunting.

Also, I think the Angry Mom Records Bronwyn is talking about is this one? They are still around. I think the guy from Bunny Brains is connected to it in some way. www.angry-mom-records.com

Yo Bill, wrong year it was 87. It may have only been released in Europe https://www.discogs.com/Various-Kick-It-The-Def-Jam-Sampler-Volume-One/release/89879 this was the same year when Ice-T dropped Rhyme Pays man I love that album

@Tall Paul - okay got it. @Jake - wow never even heard of that store

I too was broke as a kid. I would "borrow" records from the library. I gripped Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark. I dropped it on my basement floor and it shattered. My mom had to buy a replacement at Alwicks.

I'm actually standing next to the scene of the crime as i type, lol.
