"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Anybody watching the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime? She meets Lenny Bruce in 1959 and is trying to become a standup comedian! Its pretty cool like Madmen in that its retro. And funny as heck!

@WildNeil: “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” seems decent. At least a lot better than a lot of the reject-if-it-were-real-TV shows that Amazon Prime pumps put.

“Sherman-Palladino also has strong ties to the comedy scene of the era — especially comedians of Jewish descent — thanks to her dad, who was a standup comic at the time. She grew up close with Lenny Bruce's mother as a child, which inspired her to work Bruce into the series as a sort of mentor figure to Midge…” www.romper.com...

@WN & @Jake, I like that show but there are a lot of anachronisms, aren't there? It's funny but the stand-up routines aren't anywhere near as corny as real 1950s stand-up. But then people might not want to watch the show if they were, so I say embrace the anachronisms. Fun show.

@Ike-yeah, but look at who she is watching-Lenny Bruce (VERY controversial for the time), Redd Foxx (he was pretty groundbreaking)...I only saw 3 episodes so far though. But yeah, viewers would get turned off by the really really normal stand up acts. I liked the crying guy with the dead ventriloquist dummy, that was really unnerving like Andy Kaufmann type weird!
  11:43am
JakeGould:

@Ike: Yeah, I see what you are saying. There is a “fauxstalgia” aspect to that show that makes me wince. Lots of critics write about the uniquely NYC Jewish cultural aspect of it. And I think that’s cool! But it all seems extremely Upper West Side which honestly annoys me since Seinfeld, Woody Allen and others focus on the Upper West Side as the “real” NYC experience. I’m personally not completely sold on the core premise, but like I said… It’s better than tons of other “Why did they throw money at this dreck?” shows that clog up streaming services.
